Syrian National Youth Party
The Syrian National Youth Party is a political party that was approved on 14 March 2012 following the Syrian constitutional referendum, 2012 that introduced multi party elections into Syria. It describes itself as neither "pro- or anti-government" but says while it "opposes wrongdoing"; it functions "under the umbrella of Syria, the homeland, and President Bashar al-Assad" It fielded three candidates in Damascus Governorate in the Syrian parliamentary election, 2012, although contested the results, claiming that the vote had been marred by irregularities and fraud. As a result, the party rejected the election results and proclaimed the new parliament illegitimate. Parliamentary elections were held in Syria on 7 May 2012 to elect the members of the Syrian People's Council. The elections followed the approval of a new constitution in a referendum on 26 February 2012. Background The elections were postponed from May 2011 to February 2012 and then again, due to the civil war and the referendum on a new constitution. The 250-seat parliament's term expired March 2011 but it was extended in accordance with the country's new constitution. Syrian Constitutional Referendum, 2012
A constitutional referendum was held in Syria on 26 February 2012. In response to the Syrian Civil War, President Bashar al-Assad ordered a new constitution to be drafted. The referendum was not monitored by foreign observers. Background The new constitution would set a limit of two seven-year terms for future presidents and also removed Article 8 of the constitution of Syria, which stated that "the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party leads the state and society."
