Syneta Brevitibialis
''Syneta'' is a genus of leaf beetles in the subfamily Synetinae. There are about 11 described species in ''Syneta''. The genus is entirely holarctic in distribution, with species appearing in North America, Siberia, East Asia and Northern Europe. Nomenclature The generic name "''Syneta''", derived from the Greek word meaning "sagacious", was first used by Eschscholtz in his collection, though he never published it. ''Syneta'' was then listed in the last two editions of Dejean's Catalogue of Coleoptera. No characters for the genus were mentioned in the Catalogue, though three species were listed; of these species, only one ('' Syneta betulae'') was considered valid, the other two being '' nomina nuda'', automatically making it the type species of the genus. Because of its inclusion in the Catalogue with a valid species, the name ''Syneta'' should be attributed to Dejean, though it has also been attributed to Lacordaire, who was the first to publish it with a description in ... Pierre François Marie Auguste Dejean
Pierre François Marie Auguste Dejean (10 August 1780 – 17 March 1845), was a French soldier and entomologist. Dejean described a large number of beetles in a series of catalogues. A soldier of fortune during the Napoleonic Wars, he rose to the rank of lieutenant general and ''aide de campe'' to Napoleon. He amassed vast collections of Coleoptera, some even collected on the battlefield at Waterloo. At the battle of Alcanizas he took time out of battle to pick up a beetle that he pinned on to cork on the inside of his helmet. After victory, he was pleased to find the beetle intact. He listed 22,399 species in his cabinets in 1837—at the time, the greatest collection of Coleoptera in the world. In 1802, he began publishing a catalogue of his vast collection, including 22,000 species names. Dejean was an opponent of the Principle of Priority in nomenclature. ''Syneta adamsi'' is a species of beetles from the family of leaf beetles, subfamily Synetinae. George Henry Horn
George Henry Horn (April 7, 1840 – November 24, 1897) was a U.S. entomologist who specialized in the study of beetles. Born in Philadelphia, Horn attended the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1861. From 1862 to 1866, he served in the American Civil War as surgeon to the infantry of the California Volunteers, during which time he collected insects extensively in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. He then returned to Philadelphia, where he established a medical practice, specializing in obstetrics, and was elected president of the Entomological Society of Philadelphia, the predecessor of the American Entomological Society. He would remain president of the latter society until his death. He was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1869. Ernst Friedrich Germar (3 November 1786 – 8 July 1853) was a German professor and director of the Mineralogical Museum at Halle. As well as being a mineralogist he was interested in entomology and particularly in the Coleoptera and Hemiptera. He monographed the heteropteran family Scutelleridae. Carl Gustaf Mannerheim (naturalist)
Count Carl Gustaf Mannerheim (10 August 1797 – 9 October 1854) was a Finnish entomologist and governor of the Viipuri province in the Grand Duchy of Finland. Career From 1819 he served as the secretary to the Finnish Minister Secretary of State in Saint Petersburg. In 1833 he was appointed governor of the Vaasa Province and soon after of Viipuri and Savonlinna County. From 1839 until his death he served as the chief judge of the newly formed Imperial Court of Appeals (“Kayserlichen Hofgerichtes”, hovioikeus) in Vyborg. Scientific contributions Mannerheim devoted much of his time to natural sciences and acquired a significant scientific collection of Coleoptera.
