Sylvia Grant
Sylvia Grant Order of Distinction, OD is a Jamaican retired Paralympic athletics, Paralympic athlete who competed in discus throw and javelin events in international track and field competitions, she is known as Jamaica at the Paralympics, Jamaica's most decorated female Paralympian. She is a five-time athletics at the Paralympics, Paralympic medalist, two-time Parapan American Games champion and a World Para Athletics Championships, World silver medalist. In 2021, Grant announced her retirement after competing for more than 25 years and participating in eight Paralympic games. Para-athletics is the sport of athletics practised by people with a disability as a disabled sports, parasport. The list of athletics events, athletics events within the parasport are mostly the same as those available to able-bodied people, with two major exceptions in wheelchair racing and the club throw, which are specific to the division. The sport is known by various names, including disability athletics, disabled track and field and Paralympic athletics. Top-level competitors may be called elite athletes with disability. Athletics At The Paralympics
Athletics has been contested at every Summer Paralympics since the first games in 1960. Men and women from all disability groups compete in the sport. Some athletes use wheelchairs or prosthetic limbs and compete in their respective sport independently and under their own power. Visually impaired athletes participate in running events with the help of a sighted guide, to whom they may be attached by a tether. Sound-emitting devices or a sighted "caller" are used to indicate target areas for throwing events, take-off points for jumping events, and other important locations for visually impaired competitors. There are several different classifications and groups in which athletes compete that are based on their disability. Jamaica made its Paralympic Games début at the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv. It competed again in 1972, was absent in 1976, returned in 1980, and has competed at every edition of the Summer Paralympics since then. Jamaica has never taken part in the Winter Paralympics.
