Syeda Shahar Banu
Syeda Shahar Banu (; 1914–1983) was a leader of the Bengali language movement and pioneer of the women's rights movement in Sylhet. She also played an important role in the lead-up to the 1947 Sylhet referendum and the establishment of Sylhet Government Women's College. Early life and family Syeda Shahar Banu Chowdhury was born in 1914, to a Bengali Muslim family of Syeds in the village of Syedpur in Jagannathpur, Sunamganj Subdivision. Her father, Syed Abul Bashar Chowdhury, was the son of mystic poet Syed Ashhar Ali Chowdhury, and the grandson of zamindar Dewan Syed Ajmal Ali Chowdhury. The family inherited the titles from ancestor Dewan Syed Wasil Ali Chowdhury, who was appointed the Sadar-e-Ala and Dewan in the Nawabi period. Jagannathpur ( bn, জগন্নাথপুর) is an upazila located in the southeast of the district of Sunamganj and in the middle of the division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. It is bordered by Chhatak and Dakshin Sunamganj to the north, Bishwanath and Osmani Nagar to the east, Derai to the west, and Nabiganj to the south. History of Jagannathpur dates back to 12 century. The Nawab of Bengal ( bn, বাংলার নবাব) was the hereditary ruler of Bengal Subah in Mughal India. In the early 18th-century, the Nawab of Bengal was the ''de facto'' independent ruler of the three regions of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa which constitute the modern-day sovereign country of Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. They are often referred to as the Nawab of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa ( bn, বাংলা, বিহার ও উড়িষ্যার নবাব). Rawshan Ara Bachchu (17 December 1932 – 3 December 2019) was a Bangladeshi activist. She took part in Bengali Language Movement in 1952. She was awarded Anannya Top Ten Awards in 2009. Early life Bachchu's family originated from Kulaura in Moulvibazar District. She was a student of Brojomohun College. In 1947, at the initiative of the university students and Tamaddun Majlish, she along with 7 or 8 other students formed the State Language Action Council. Karimunnesa Khanam Chaudhurani ( bn, করিমুন্নেসা খাঁনম চৌধুরানী; 1855 – 6 September 1926) was a Bengali poet, social worker, and patron of literature. Early life and family Karimunnesa was born in 1855 into a Bengali Muslim family in Rangpur, Bengal Presidency, British Raj. Her father was Zahiruddin Muhammad Abu Ali Saber, the Zamindar of Payraband Pargana, and her mother was Rahatunnesa Sabera Chaudhurani. Her younger sister was Begum Rokeya. Raised in a traditional Islamic household, Karimunnesa observed the purdah and her early education began with the Quran. She memorised Persian verses by listening in on her brothers lessons, and learnt English and Bengali through her own effort. Zobeda Khanom Chowdhury (; 1901–1986), also known as Zobeda Rahim Chowdhury (), was one among the leading woman who partook in the Bengali language movement from Sylhet and a pioneering women in Bangladeshi politics. Early life and education Zobeda Khanom was born in 1901, to a Bengali Muslim family in Jorhat, Assam. Her father was Khan Bahadur Sharafat Ali and her mother was Nurjahan Begum. The family were originally from Shilghat, Golapganj in Sylhet, but Ali had moved to Assam for employment. Her education began in Dibrugarh, also in Assam, where her father was working at the time. She then enrolled at the Eden Mohila College in Dacca, where she became the college's first female Muslim student.
