2009 World Aquatics Championships
The 2009 World Aquatics Championships ( it, Campionati mondiali di nuoto 2009) or the XIII FINA World Championships were held in Rome, Italy from 18 July to 2 August 2009. The 2009 Championships featured competition in all 5 aquatics disciplines: diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo. Rome won the right to stage the event on 16 July 2005 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Rome defeated rival bids from Athens (Greece), Moscow (Russia) and Yokohama (Japan). A record 2556 athletes from 185 countries participated. FINA's decision to allow the use of polyurethane suits caused these Championships to be dubbed the "Plastic Games". Diane Bui Duyet, sometimes spelled "Bui-Duyet", (born 22 December 1979 in Nouméa, New Caledonia) is a French New Caledonian swimmer. Due to the New Caledonia's status as an overseas territory of France, Bui Duyet competes for New Caledonia in regional (Pacific) competitions and for France in continental and above competitions (similar to Malia Metella's situation with French Guiana). At the 2007 and 2011 Pacific Games, Bui Duyet swam on several relay teams together with Lara Grangeon, who also represents both France and New Caledonia. Bui Duyet was the world record holder in the women's short course (25 meter pool) 100 meter butterfly with a time of 55.05 seconds. Triin Aljand (born 8 July 1985) is a retired Estonian swimmer who won a silver medal at the 2012 European Aquatics Championships in 50 m butterfly. She competed in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle and 100 butterfly, but never reached the finals. Hinkelien Schreuder (born 13 February 1984) is a former butterfly, freestyle and backstroke swimmer from The Netherlands, who also competed in the medley events. Gabriella Machado e Silva (born December 12, 1988, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a Brazilian butterfly swimmer and Olympian. As of October 2008, she was the South American and Brazilian record holder in the long-course 100-metre butterfly. Christine Marie Magnuson (born October 17, 1985) is an American competition swimmer and two-time Olympic medalist. She has won a total of five medals in major international competition, four silvers, and one bronze spanning the Olympics, the World Championships, and the Pan Pacific Championships. Early years Magnuson was born in John, Illinois, and graduated from Victor J. Andrew HIgh School in Tinley Park, Illinois.
