Swatara is an unincorporated community in Macville Township, Aitkin County, Minnesota, United States. Although unincorporated, Swatara has a post office with the ZIP code 55785. History The community at one time was served by the Soo Line Railroad and had a railroad station. Swatara and neighboring townships were considered as a potential location of the Minnesota Experimental City that was proposed by scientist Athelstan Spilhaus in the 1970s. The city was envisioned to house 250,000 people and would use experimental technologies and methodologies such as moving walkways and monorail systems for transportation and a transparent dome encapsulating the city. Remer, Minnesota
Remer is a city in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 370 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area. Minnesota State Highways 6 and 200 are two of the main arterial routes in the community. History A post office called Remer has been in operation since 1904. The city was named for its first postmaster, William P. Remer. Remer is also the location of the Thunder Lake Lodge, where Al Capone stayed on his vacations to Minnesota. The room he stayed in was named McCleary Cabin, which was originally built in 1912. In 2009, a motion-activated camera captured a picture of what some consider Bigfoot in an area near Remer. Athelstan Spilhaus
Athelstan Frederick Spilhaus (November 25, 1911 – March 30, 1998) was a South African-American geophysicist and oceanographer. Among other accomplishments, Spilhaus is credited with proposing the establishment of Sea Grant Colleges at a meeting of the American Fisheries Society in 1963 as a parallel to the successful land-grant colleges, which he claimed was "one of the best investments this nation ever made. The same kind of imagination and foresight should be applied to the exploration of the sea." Biography Spilhaus was born in 1911 in Cape Town, South Africa, grandson of the mathematician Thomas Muir. Minnesota Experimental City
The Minnesota Experimental City (MXC) was a proposed planned community to be located in northern Minnesota (near Swatara in Aitkin County). Proposed and studied beginning in the 1960s, it would have been constructed as a public–private partnership. In contrast with many of the model cities of the time, the MXC was to be experimental, trying new things rather than proposing to select from the best of the existing practice. The project was initiated and directed by renowned scientist and University of Minnesota dean Athelstan Spilhaus. The city was designed for 250,000 people over .
