Svend Foyn
Svend Foyn (July 9, 1809 – November 30, 1894) was a Norwegian whaling, shipping magnate and philanthropist. He pioneered revolutionary methods for hunting and processing whales. Svend Foyn introduced the modern harpoon cannon and brought whaling into a modern age. He is also recognized as a pioneer who introduced sealing to Vestfold County. Background Svend Foyn was born in the neighborhood of Foynegården at Tønsberg in Vestfold, Norway. He was the son of shipmaster Laurentius Foyn (1772–1813) and Benthe Marie Ager (1781–1842). Foyn was fatherless at four years of age and his mother came to characterize his upbringing. By age 11, Foyn sent to sea on the family ships. Svend Asmussen
Svend Asmussen (28 February 1916 – 7 February 2017) was a Danish jazz violinist, known as "The Fiddling Viking". A Swing style virtuoso, he played and recorded with many of the other jazz musicians, including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Stephane Grappelli. He played publicly until 2010 when he had a blood clot, his career having spanned eight decades. Life and career Asmussen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, was raised in a musical family, and started taking violin lessons at the age of seven. Aged 16 he first heard recordings by jazz violinist Joe Venuti and began to emulate his style. He started working professionally as a violinist, vibraphonist, and singer at age 17, leaving his formal training behind for good. Svend Unmack Larsen (23 September 1893, in Aarhus – 23 March 1965) was a Danish politician for the Social Democratic Party who served as Denmark's Minister of Justice (1939–1940) and was the mayor of Aarhus, Denmark for 13 years (1945–1958). Early life Larsen was born in Aarhus on 23 September 1893, the son of L.M. Larsen and Thyra Vilhelmine Unmack. His father was the director of the city's poorhouse and Larsen was raised there. Svend Melsing (27 December 1888 – 8 June 1946) was a Denmark, Danish stage and film actor, theatre director and playwright whose career spanned nearly forty years. Early life Born Svend Nielsen in Fredericia, Denmark, he was the son of Peder Nielsen, who was an army infantry captain and military commander, and Marie Hansine Rose. Svend Jakobsen (1935–2022) was a Danish politician who held different cabinet posts between 1973 and 1981. He was the speaker of the Danish Parliament or Folketing from 1981 to 1989. Svend Bayer (born 2 January 1946 in Uganda to Danish parents) is a Danish-British studio potter described by Michael Cardew as "easily my best pupil." Bayer grew up in Tanganyika and discovered pottery whilst studying geography and economics at the University of Exeter from 1965 to 1968. He began work as an apprentice at Wenford Bridge Pottery with Michael Cardew in 1969. In 1972 he joined the Brannam Pottery in Barnstaple, where he worked as a thrower for a year. He has been described as probably the best of the potters to work at Wenford Bridge, and his large pots have been said to be "very powerful". After travelling in the Far East, Asia and the United States, he set up his own workshop in Sheepwash Beaworthy, Devon in 1975. Svend Gunnarsen Auken (; 24 May 1943 – 4 August 2009) was a Danish politician. He represented the Social Democrats as a member of the Danish parliament (Folketinget) from 1971 until his death. He was married to journalist and editor Bettina Heltberg from 1966 to 1993. At his death he was married to film director Anne Wivel. He had four children. Margrete Auken is his sister. He died of prostate cancer on 4 August 2009. Political career Auken held a degree in political science from the University of Aarhus and also taught there for a period in the very early 1970s.
