Suwa Seriya Ambulance Service
The Suwa Seriya Foundation (Suwa Seriya Ambulance Service or 1990 Ambulance Service) is a nonprofit organization responsible for operating ambulances and answering and responding to urgent and medical emergency, emergency medical situations within Provinces of Sri Lanka, all nine provinces of Sri Lanka. The service responds to 1990 phone calls across the island. In 2016, the foundation was established on a $7.56 million grant from the Government of India on a request made by the Government of Sri Lanka on a proposal made by Harsha de Silva, then a deputy minister for a pre-hospital emergency ambulance service, which Sri Lanka lacked at the time. The initial grant allowed the ambulance service start its service in the Western and Southern Provinces with a fleet of 88 ambulances. Ambulances
An ambulance is a medically equipped vehicle which transports patients to treatment facilities, such as hospitals. Typically, out-of-hospital medical care is provided to the patient during the transport. Ambulances are used to respond to medical emergencies by emergency medical services (EMS). For this purpose, they are generally equipped with flashing warning lights and sirens. They can rapidly transport paramedics and other first responders to the scene, carry equipment for administering emergency care and transport patients to hospital or other definitive care. Emergency medical services in Sri Lanka is being established using a public/private system aimed at the provision of emergency ambulance service, including emergency care and transportation to hospitals.
