Susan Parkinson (nutritionist)
Susan Parkinson (née Holmes; 26 July 1920 – 7 October 2012) was a New Zealand nutritionist who worked in Fiji and the South Pacific. She was particularly known for her encouragement to residents of the region to eat healthily by consuming local foods. Early life Parkinson was born in Masterton, New Zealand, on 26 July 1920. She studied nutrition and dietetics at the University of Otago. She then studied as a dietician at Wellington Hospital. In 1946 she moved to the United Kingdom, first working at Leeds Infirmary and then the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in London. On the strength of this work she was able to obtain a scholarship for Cornell University in the USA, where she studied for a master’s degree in public health and nutrition. Her thesis, on nutrition among Navajo native Americans in Arizona, made her aware of the dangers of rapidly changing diet amongst indigenous peoples. Officer Of The Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female.
