SuriPop
The Suriname Popular Song Festival (commonly called SuriPop) is a biennial song festival that has taken place in Suriname since 1982. The festival is organized by the Foundation for the Promotion of Arts and Culture in Suriname (Dutch: ). The event is one of the largest music events in Suriname. The first three editions of the festival were held annually, but later editions have been held every two years. The twentieth edition of the festival, SuriPop XX in 2018, was named the "Golden Edition". History The original idea for the festival was from Juan Navia, a Chilean musician who had moved to Suriname. He founded the organization to host this festival in 1978 together with several friends, including Ruben del Prado, Werner Duttenhofer, Leni Healy, Karin Refos and Harto Soemodihardjo. Benjamin Faya
Roché Pinas (born 1988 or 1989), known professionally as Benjamin Faya, is a Surinamese singer. He primarily performs reggae and dancehall, and has had several number 1 hits on the Nationale Top 40 Suriname. In 2016, he won the national song competition SuriPop. Early life Roché Pinas was born in 1988 or 1989. He grew up in a family with seven children; as a child, he received high marks for singing in school. He is married with three children. His employer gives him space to work on his music career, and allows him to be absent for music trips abroad. Faya began to see success in his music career around 2015. In that year, he performed in the Poetry&Beyond Sessions, a concert series organised by the Platform Support Suriname Foundation. Karin Refos
Karin B. Refos (born 1958) is a Surinamese former model, entrepreneur, and public speaker on child welfare and women's rights. She founded the brand consultancy STAS International. Career Modeling and music Refos' father, Ewald "Slim" Refos, was director of the mining company Suralco and president of the Surinamese Football Association. Her brother Erik Refos became a musician. Refos participated in the 1978 Miss Suriname pageant. She was the second runner-up, with Peggy Ann von Stein as first runner-up and Garance Rustwijk as the title winner. The newspaper ''De Vrije Stem'' described Refos as "a personality that was very much the favorite of the room". Surinamese Music
The music of Suriname is known for kaseko music, and for having an Indo-Caribbean tradition. Kawina Kawina originated around the 1860s, after the abolition of slavery. The vocals are typically call-and-response, and it is accompanied by all kinds of typical Surinamese percussion, such as the skratji. Like many South American music genres, the rhythm of the ''kawina'' originates in Africa. African slaves took their religions, such as Winti, and music with them to Suriname. To dissipate the time, the slaves sung during the work on the plantations, often in a typical pattern of one voice that asks for, and is answered in unison ("call-and-response"). The music was performed so rhythmically that it became a dance. In the beginning, the lyrics were religious. After abolition of slavery, it became entertainment music, with lyrics that are more socially critical in tone. Ampie's Broadcasting Corporation Suriname N.V. commonly known as ABC, the love station or simply ABC is a Surinamese radio and television station, broadcasting from the Maystraat in Paramaribo. History André (Ampie) Kamperveen is the founder of ABC Radio.
