Surat Basin
The Surat Basin is a geological basin in eastern Australia. It is part of the Great Artesian Basin drainage basin of Australia. The Surat Basin extends across an area of 270,000 square kilometres and the southern third of the basin occupies a large part of northern New South Wales, the remainder is in Queensland. It comprises Jurassic through to Cretaceous aged sediments derived from Triassic and Permian arc rocks of the Hunter-Bowen orogeny. Towns situated above the basin, once dominated by agriculture, are experiencing a boom as mines and infrastructure in the area are expanded. Formation The Surat Basin is an intracratonic basin that covers a sizeable section of New South Wales and southern Queensland. The Great Artesian Basin (GAB), located in Australia, is the largest and deepest artesian basin in the world, stretching over , with measured water temperatures ranging from . The basin provides the only source of fresh water through much of inland Australia. Roma To Brisbane Pipeline
The Roma to Brisbane Pipeline or Wallumbilla to Brisbane Pipeline is a natural gas pipeline in Queensland, Australia. It is one of five major natural gas pipelines in the state. It is the oldest operating natural gas pipeline in Australia. Operations began in March 1969. An opening ceremony was attended by the premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen. The pipeline was constructed by Thiess Pty Ltd. Reserves discovered by 1964 justified the need for a pipeline to markets. The pipeline moves gas from the fields at Wallumbilla to markets in Brisbane and regional networks via a 438 kilometre long network. Both conventional and coal seam gas are transported. Gas flow is bi-directional. The Oakey Power Station was strategically built at Oakey on the pipeline to help ensure supply. The pipeline is owned by APA Group and follows regulations set out by the Australian Energy Regulator. Coalbed Methane
Coalbed methane (CBM or coal-bed methane), coalbed gas, coal seam gas (CSG), or coal-mine methane (CMM) is a form of natural gas extracted from coal beds. In recent decades it has become an important source of energy in United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries. The term refers to methane absorbed into the solid matrix of the coal. It is called 'sweet gas' because of its lack of hydrogen sulfide. The presence of this gas is well known from its occurrence in underground coal mining, where it presents a serious safety risk. Coalbed methane is distinct from a typical sandstone or other conventional gas reservoir, as the methane is stored within the coal by a process called adsorption. The methane is in a near-liquid state, lining the inside of pores within the coal (called the matrix). Coal
Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed as rock strata called coal seams. Coal is mostly carbon with variable amounts of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. Coal is formed when dead plant matter decays into peat and is converted into coal by the heat and pressure of deep burial over millions of years. They are organic-rich sediments that may have been deposited in a variety of environments including deep water marine, lacustrine and deltaic. Petroleum, also known as crude oil, or simply oil, is a naturally occurring yellowish-black liquid mixture of mainly hydrocarbons, and is found in geological formations. The Griman Creek Formation is a geological formation in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland, Australia whose strata date back to the Albian-Cenomanian of the Early-Late Cretaceous.Bell et al., 2019 It is most notable being a major source of opal, found near the town of Lightning Ridge, New South Wales.
