Suor Prudenza Cambi
Suor Prudenza Fiammetta Cambi (died 1601) was a Florentine nun and artist during the sixteenth century at Santa Caterina da Siena in Florence, Italy. She has been identified as one of Plautilla Nelli’s artistic ‘disciples.’ Early life and background Prudenza Cambi came from a wealthy and noble family from the Florentine Drago neighborhood in the San Giovanni Quarter. She was the daughter of Filippo di Francesco Cambi and Maria di Francesco della Fonte. Her grandfather, Francesco di Guido Cambi, signed a petition in 1497 supporting Savonarola. Francesco di Guido Cambi held political office as a member of the Buonomini in 1501 and the Priori in 1504. Like her great aunt, Suor Filippa di Bartolomeo Corsini, Prudenza entered the convent of Santa Caterina da Siena. Santa Caterina da Siena is a church in Rome dedicated to Catherine of Siena. It is sited on via Giulia in the Regola district. History This church is indissolubly linked to the history of the Archconfraternity of Siena in Rome, to which it still belongs. A sizable Sienese community in Rome was established at the end of the 14th century, and first used the church of Santa Maria in Monterone as its home before shifting to Santa Maria sopra Minerva (site of Catherine of Siena's tomb) around the middle of the 15th century. In 1461, the year of Catherine's canonization, it moved again, this time to San Nicola degli Incoronati on via Giulia - Sienese merchants and bankers had been living on that street since the end of the 15th century. Plautilla Nelli
Sister Plautilla Nelli (1524–1588) was a self-taught nun-artist and the first ever known female Italian Renaissance painting, Renaissance painter of Florence. She was a nun of the Dominican convent, Dominican convent of St. Catherine of Siena located in San Marco, Florence, Piazza San Marco, Florence, and was heavily influenced by the teachings of Girolamo Savonarola, Savonarola and by the artwork of Fra Bartolomeo. Girolamo Savonarola
Girolamo Savonarola, OP (, , ; 21 September 1452 – 23 May 1498) or Jerome Savonarola was an Italian Dominican friar from Ferrara and preacher active in Renaissance Florence. He was known for his prophecies of civic glory, the destruction of secular art and culture, and his calls for Christian renewal. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule, and the exploitation of the poor. In September 1494, when Charles VIII of France invaded Italy and threatened Florence, such prophecies seemed on the verge of fulfilment.
