Sun Records (other Companies)
Sun Records has been the name of multiple 20th century record labels, most famously Sun Records, a Memphis-based music label. Jazz saxophonist Frank Wright also started Sun Records (jazz) while living in Paris, France. History The first "Sun Records" in Europe were single-sided disc records put out by The Crystalate Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company Ltd. of Tonbridge, Kent, England, from about 1905 to 1910. (The same company would later produce records under the name Imperial Records). A nearly contemporaneous label was produced in the United States by the Leeds & Catlin company, about 1905–1907. The third "Sun Records" was produced by the Sun Record Company of Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the early 1920s. Many or all of the masters pressed were leased from the US-based Okeh Records. Holiday Inn Records
Holiday Inn Records was an American record label founded by Wayne Foster in 1961. It was initially intended as a creative outlet for Foster and Kemmons Wilson, as an independent business venture. Foster ran the label between 1961 and 1963. Sam Phillips of Sun later ran the label on behalf of Wilson. History In 1961, D. Wayne Foster discovered a musical group named the Roller Coasters. Foster brought the group to the Owen Bradley's Studio in Nashville, Tennessee to record. The group recorded two songs, "Rim Shot, Part 1" and "Rim Shot, Part 2". Foster created Holiday Inn Records to distribute the single. Holiday Inn Records recorded a number of acts that Foster discovered, and in most cases was involved in the recording sessions, assisted by Neal Matthews Jr. of the Jordanaires. Rufus Thomas
Rufus C. Thomas, Jr. (March 26, 1917 – December 15, 2001) was an American rhythm-and-blues, funk, soul and blues singer, songwriter, dancer, DJ and comic entertainer from Memphis, Tennessee. He recorded for several labels, including Chess Records and Sun Records in the 1950s, before becoming established in the 1960s and 1970s at Stax Records. He is best known for his novelty dance records, including "Walking the Dog" (1963), "Do the Funky Chicken" (1969), and " (Do the) Push and Pull" (1970). According to the Mississippi Blues Commission, "Rufus Thomas embodied the spirit of Memphis music perhaps more than any other artist, and from the early 1940s until his death . . . occupied many important roles in the local scene." "My Adobe Hacienda" is a song composed by Louise Massey and Lee Penny. It first became popular in 1941 with Massey's recorded version, where it placed at #23. The song was most popular in 1947 when Eddy Howard took the song to #2. That year the song was also recorded by Kenny Baker (#16), the Dinning Sisters (#9), and the Billy Williams Quartet (#13). Massey's original recording was re-released, and this time attained a chart position of #16. Between May and June 1947, the song appeared on Your Hit Parade for three weeks. Billboard listed it as 1947's 12th best seller in sheet music. Art Kassel released the song as a Vogue picture disc. Louise Massey
Louise Massey (born ''Victoria Louise Massey''; 10 August 1902 – 20 June 1983, in San Angelo, Texas), American singer and songwriter born in Midland, Texas. The Massey family left Texas while Louise Massey was very young and she grew up near Roswell in Lincoln County, New Mexico. In 1918, Louise's father, Henry Massey, started a band that featured himself and three of his eight children singing and playing musical instruments. Most of the children played were able to play several instruments while dressed in “elaborate cowboy outfits as their stage attire,” Louise played piano and sang. The Massey’s music career began in 1920s, when they played and sang at local shows and church socials. At the age of 15, Louise married Milton Mabie, who also joined the group. Papirossen
"Papirosn" (, ) is a Yiddish song that was written in the 1920s. The song tells the story of a Jewish boy who sells cigarettes to survive on the streets. He depicts his tragic fate; having lost his parents, his younger sister has died on the bench, and eventually he loses his own hope. The song's author Herman Yablokoff was a member of the Yiddish theater that was active in Lithuania and Poland in the years following World War I. He was inspired by children who tried to make a living selling cigarettes in the streets. The sight of the children reminded him of his childhood in World War I in Grodno, where he tried selling cigarettes to passers-by. Yablokoff went to the United States in 1924; the song was published in an American radio program in Yiddish in 1932 and became a hit as part of a musical of the same name that premiered in 1935.
