Summit Road (tree)
The Summit Road Tree is a giant sequoia located in the Mountain Home Grove, one of several sequoia groves found in the southern Sierra Nevada (U.S.), Sierra Nevada of California. It is the List of largest giant sequoias, 16th largest giant sequoia in the world, and could be considered the 15th largest depending on how badly Ishi Giant atrophied during the Rough Fire in 2015. History The Summit Road Tree, also known as the Summit Tree, was named and measured in 1988 by "big tree hunter" Wendell Flint, with the help of friends Mike Law and Jerry Latham. Flint later determined that it was by volume the 16th largest tree in the world. However, the number two tree, the Washington (tree), Washington Tree, lost its ranking in 2003 due to damage from a lightning strike, and the Summit Road Tree is now considered the 16th largest. ''Sequoiadendron giganteum'' (giant sequoia; also known as giant redwood, Sierra redwood, Sierran redwood, California big tree, Wellingtonia or simply big treea nickname also used by John Muir) is the sole living species in the genus ''Sequoiadendron'', and one of three species of coniferous trees known as redwoods, classified in the family Cupressaceae in the subfamily Sequoioideae, together with ''Sequoia sempervirens'' (coast redwood) and ''Metasequoia glyptostroboides'' (dawn redwood). Mountain Home Grove
Mountain Home Grove is a grove of giant sequoia trees located in the southern part of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, and includes some of the largest trees in the world. Description Mountain Home Grove is located partly in Balch Park, which is administered by Tulare County, California, partly in the Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest (MHDSF), and partly in Giant Sequoia National Monument, which was formerly in Sequoia National Forest. The grove includes four of the 20 largest giant sequoia trees (by volume), as well as several other notable trees. This makes Mountain Home the second largest grove of sequoias. This is a list of giant sequoia grove (nature), groves. All naturally occurring giant sequoia groves are located in the moist, unglaciated ridges and valleys of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada range in California, United States. They can be found at elevations between . While many groves are within national park boundaries, such as Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park, most of the giant sequoia groves are under the care of the United States Forest Service, placing them outside the legislative mandate that excludes commercial timber harvest. Ishi Giant
Ishi Giant is a giant sequoia in California, United States. It is located in Kennedy Grove, which is part of a group of eight closely spaced giant sequoia groves situated in Sequoia National Forest in the Sierra Nevada in eastern central California. It was the 14th largest giant sequoia in the world before it atrophied during the Rough Fire in 2015. History Ishi Giant was discovered by naturalist Dwight M. Willard in 1993. Naturalist Wendell D. Rough Fire
The Rough Fire was a wildfire of the 2015 California season. It burned of land, a season record, and was extinguished by 3,742 firefighters. Progression The fire, caused by a lightning strike on July 31, approximately North of Hume Lake, burned mainly in the Sierra National Forest and Sequoia National Forest. On September 2, over 2,500 people were safely evacuated from Hume Lake Christian Camps and surrounding area. All camp events were cancelled and only security personnel remained. On September 5, the fire reached Kings Canyon National Park as it crossed the mark. On September 7, a severely burned firefighter was airlifted to the Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. The Washington tree is a giant sequoia in the Giant Forest Grove in Tulare County, California, within Sequoia National Park. It is named after George Washington, first President of the United States. Until it partially collapsed in January 2005, the Washington tree was the second largest tree in the world (after the General Sherman tree). Though badly damaged, the tree is still living. Before damage The tree was studied in 1999 by scientists from Humboldt State University and University of Washington. The tree was tall, with a basal diameter of . Its total volume was , including the main stem and the 46 largest branches . The scientists discovered a large cavity in the trunk of the tree, measuring in height by in diameter.
