Sulo Suorttanen
Sulo Elias Suorttanen (13 February 1921, Valkeala - 24 September 2005) was a Finnish lawyer, civil servant and politician. He served as Minister of Defence and at the same time Deputy Minister of the Interior from 27 May 1966 to 14 May 1970. He was a member of the Parliament of Finland from 1962 to 1970 and again from 1972 to 1975, representing the Agrarian League (which changed its name to ''Centre Party'' in 1965). He was a graduate of the University of Helsinki. During the Second World War Suorttanen served Nazi Germany in the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the Waffen-SS From 1941 to 1943, 1,408 Finns volunteered for service on the Eastern Front of World War II in the ''Waffen-SS'', in units of the SS Division Wiking. Valkeala
Valkeala is a former municipality of Finland. It is located in the province of Southern Finland, and is a neighborhood of city of Kouvola, and it was a part of the Kymenlaakso region. The municipality had a population of 11,238 (2003) and covered an area of 1,004.40 km² of which 143.47 km² was water. The population density was 13.1 inhabitants per km². In the Valkeala region there is the lake ''Vekaranjärvi'' near which the Karelia Brigade is located. Valkeala is famous for Repovesi National Park. The municipality was unilingually Finnish. As of 2009, the six municipalities – Kouvola, Kuusankoski, Elimäki, Anjalankoski, Valkeala and Jaala – were consolidated, accounting for the new municipality of Kouvola with a population of over 80,000, being the 10th largest city in Finland. Finnish Volunteer Battalion Of The Waffen-SS
From 1941 to 1943, 1,408 Finns volunteered for service on the Eastern Front of World War II in the ''Waffen-SS'', in units of the SS Division Wiking. Most of these volunteers served as motorized infantry in the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the ''Waffen-SS'' (german: Finnisches Freiwilligen-Bataillon der Waffen-SS; fi, Suomalainen Waffen-SS-vapaaehtoispataljoona). The unit was disbanded in mid-1943 as the volunteers' two-year commitment had expired and the Finnish government was unwilling to allow more men to volunteer. In 1944-1945 a company sized unit of Finnish defectors recruited to the SS continued fighting alongside Germany. The battalion was formed following the Winter War, as Finland grew closer to Germany with recruitment beginning in 1941. Negotiations took place between the Finnish and German governments to reach compromises over certain sensitive issues for the battalion such as an oath of allegiance.
