Sugar Daddy is a candy bar on a stick manufactured by Tootsie Roll Industries that is essentially a moderately hard brick of caramel. A bite-sized caramel-flavored jelly bean candy based on the Sugar Daddy is marketed under the name Sugar Babies. History The Sugar Daddy was created in 1925 by The James O. Welch Company and was originally called a "papa sucker." In 1932, the company changed the candy's name to Sugar Daddy. According to Tootsie Roll Inc, the name change suggested "a wealth of sweetness." The James O. Welch Company was purchased by Nabisco (now Mondelēz International) in 1963. The Welch brands were sold to Warner-Lambert in 1988; Tootsie Roll Industries acquired them in 1993. Nutrition Today, Sugar Daddy candies are produced in two standard sizes, the Junior Pop, with 53 kcal, and the Large Pop, with 200 kcal. Tootsie Roll Industries is an American manufacturer of confectionery based in Chicago, Illinois. Its best-known products include the namesake Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Pops. Sugar Babies (candy)
Sugar Babies are bite-sized, pan-coated, chewy milk caramel sweets which are relatively soft to chew. They are a confection originally developed in 1935 for the James O. Welch Co. by Charles Vaughan (1901-1995), a veteran food chemist and one of the pioneers of pan chocolate, who invented both Junior Mints and Sugar Babies for the James O. Welch Company. Sugar Babies were named after a song called "Let Me Be Your Sugar Baby". The company was purchased by Nabisco in 1963. The Welch family of products changed hands a few more times, going from Nabisco to Warner-Lambert (in 1988) then to Tootsie Roll in 1993. Presently, packages of Sugar Babies name Charms LLC of Covington, TN, a subsidiary of Tootsie Roll, as manufacturer. A Tootsie Pop (known as Tutsi Chupa Pop in Latin America) is a hard candy lollipop filled with the chocolate-flavored chewy Tootsie Roll candy. They were invented in 1931 by an employee of The Sweets Company of America. Tootsie Rolls had themselves been invented in 1896 by Leo Hirschfield. The company changed its name to Tootsie Roll Industries in 1969. The candy made its debut in 1931 and since then various flavors have been introduced. The idea came to be when a man who worked at The Sweets Company of America licked his daughter's lollipop at the same time he was chewing a Tootsie Roll.
