Sue Ferns
Susan Elizabeth Ferns (born 27 October 1960) is a British trade unionist. Born in Sheffield, Ferns studied at Salford University. In 1982, she began working for the Trades Union Congress (TUC) as a policy officer. In 1993, she moved to work as a research officer at the Institution of Professionals Managers and Specialists. This union merged into Prospect in 2001, and the following year, Ferns became its head of research. In 2005, she was elected as a member of the General Council of the TUC. In 2013, Ferns became the Prospect's director of communications and research, and then in 2018 its senior deputy general secretary. From 2007 until 2022, Ferns was also chair of Unions 21, and since 2012 has been chair of the Trade Union Sustainable Development Advisory Committee. She was appointed to the government's Green Jobs Task Force in 2021. The Institution of Professionals, Managers and Specialists (IPMS) was a trade union representing managers and other people with professional qualifications in the United Kingdom, with a majority of members working in the civil service. History The union was founded in 1919 as the Institution of Professional Civil Servants (IPCS), bringing together seventeen associations based in individual departments of the civil service. The General Council of the Trades Union Congress is an elected body which is responsible for carrying out the policies agreed at the annual British Trade Union Congresses (TUC). Organisation The council has 56 members, all of whom must be proposed by one of the unions affiliated to the TUC. Unions with more members receive an automatic allocation of seats, in proportion to their membership. Smaller unions propose candidates for eleven elected seats. In addition, there are separately elected seats: four for women, three for black workers, at least one of whom must be a woman, and one each for young workers, workers with disabilities, and LGBT workers. The President of the Trades Union Congress is a prominent but largely honorary position in British trade unionism. History Initially, the post of president was elected at the annual Trades Union Congress (TUC) itself, and would serve just for the duration of the congress. Early standing orders stated that preference had to be given to a candidate from the city where the congress was being held; they were not necessarily well-known figures. In 1900, the standing orders were changed to state that the presidency would be filled by the person who had chaired the Parliamentary Committee over the previous year. As a result, before 1900, numerous people served as Chair of the Parliamentary Committee without becoming President; after this date, Presidents were prominent figures in the national trade union movement. Gail Cartmail (born 1955) is an Assistant General Secretary (AGS) at the trade union Unite and also a member of the Trades Union Congress' (TUC) Executive Committee and General Council. Career Cartmail attended Heronswood Secondary Modern School in Welwyn Garden City, having failed her eleven plus exam. She left school with no qualifications, Cartmail began her working life as an apprentice hairdresser. Later, she began working in the publishing industry, and eventually became Mother of the Chapel for the print union, the National Graphical Association, where she gained prominence for a campaign for equal pay for women, and studied at the London College of Printing. In 1977, Cartmail began to work as a trade union liaison officer for the London Borough of Greenwich, and ten years later became a full-time trade union official for the Health Visitors' Association. Maria Exall (born August 1960) was the President of the Trades Union Congress for 2022–23, being appointed for her work in the Communication Workers Union. Education Maria Exall has a PhD in Philosophical Theology from King's College London. Trade unionism Exall was a care worker, and joined the Confederation of Health Service Employees. In 1988, she moved to work for the BT Group as a communications engineer, and joined the Communication Workers' Union. She became active with the Trades Union Congress (TUC), specialising on equality in the workplace and liaising with the affiliated Labour Party. Exall supported Jeremy Corbyn in the 2015 Labour Party leadership election. Exall chairs the TUC LGBT+ Committee, and serves on the General Council of the TUC.
