Sturgeon River (Lake Nipissing)
The Sturgeon River is a river that springs near Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park in the Timiskaming District in Ontario, Canada. It flows in a mostly south-easterly direction through Sudbury and Nipissing Districts before it empties into Lake Nipissing on the north shore. The town of Sturgeon Falls is located on the river about north of its mouth. The river is provincially significant recreational river with some 65 sets of rapids, mostly rated CI and CII that can be run all season. Ontario Power Generation operates a hydroelectric plant on the river at Crystal Falls. From 1848 to 1879, the Hudson's Bay Company operated a fur trading post called Sturgeon River House at the mouth of this river (now turned into a local museum). Sawmill
A sawmill (saw mill, saw-mill) or lumber mill is a facility where logs are cut into lumber. Modern sawmills use a motorized saw to cut logs lengthwise to make long pieces, and crosswise to length depending on standard or custom sizes (dimensional lumber). The "portable" sawmill is of simple operation. The log lies flat on a steel bed, and the motorized saw cuts the log horizontally along the length of the bed, by the operator manually pushing the saw. The most basic kind of sawmill consists of a chainsaw and a customized jig ("Alaskan sawmill"), with similar horizontal operation. Before the invention of the sawmill, boards were made in various manual ways, either rived (split) and planed, hewn, or more often hand sawn by two men with a whipsaw, one above and another in a saw pit below. Obabika River
The Obabika River is located in central Ontario, Canada. It is south of Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park and west of Lake Temagami, within Sudbury District. It flows from Obabika Lake in a south-westerly direction and drains into the Sturgeon River. The Obabika River is remote and surrounded by undeveloped wilderness. The river is characterized by long meandering sections through clay and sand valleys alternated by sections through eroded bedrock and marshes. The lower Obabika River is rather wide with several oxbow ponds, and obstructed by occasional log jams. Although the current is strong, the only noteworthy rapids occur immediately before its confluence with the Sturgeon River. With its steady current and few portages, the Obabika River is a popular canoe route within the Temagami region, linking Lake Temagami and Lady Evelyn Lake via Obabika Lake to the Sturgeon River. Temagami River
The Temagami River, formerly spelled as Timagami River, is a river in the Nipissing District of Ontario, Canada, in the Temagami region. Its source is Lake Temagami and flows through Cross Lake and Red Cedar Lake. It flows into the Sturgeon River at the community of River Valley. The Temagami River is well known for its outstanding whitewater paddling opportunities. It has a high concentration of novice to advanced whitewater stretches mixed with calm flatwater, in all 20 sets of rapids, rated CI to CIII that can be run all season. In particular, the rapids of Ragged Chutes are popular with canoeists. Its water level is controlled by the Cross Lake Dam, located on Surveyor Lake, which is also used to control waterflow out of Lake Temagami. Another 3 dams are on the river at Red Cedar Lake.
