Studio Art Quilt Associates
The Studio Art Quilt Associates, abbreviated as SAQA, is a leading non-profit advocacy group for art quilts based in Hebron, Connecticut, in the United States. Formation In the book, ''American Quilts: The Democratic Art, 1780-2007'', Robert Shaw states, "Contemporary quilts were rarely seen in major art publications or in museum and gallery exhibitions, and critical writing about unconventional quilts was almost nonexistent." Shaw further writes, "Realizing that they could not wait for attention to come to them, artist-quiltmakers began to take matters into their own hands. In 1989, California quiltmaker Yvonne Porcella founded Studio Art Quilt Associates, a nonprofit advocacy group dedicated to "serving artists working in the art quilt medium." Yvonne Porcella
Yvonne Porcella (May 12, 1936 – February 12, 2016) was an American art quilter. Life Yvonne Bechis was born in Watsonville, California, United States on May 12, 1936. She graduated in 1958 with a BS in Public Health and an RN from the University of San Francisco, and worked as an operating room nurse. That same year, she married Robert S. Porcella, a general practice physician. Porcella was a self taught quilter. Her works included paintings, weaving, pieced clothing, and art quilts. Her quilts were known for bold colors, and black and white checkerboards or stripes, and unusual titles such as ''It's About Beets & Perfume'' and ''Non Fat, Low Cholesterol, Chemically Enhanced Frozen Dairy Dessert''. Porcella founded Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. in 1989 and served as its president for 11 years. Hebron, Connecticut
Hebron is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,098 at the 2020 census. Hebron was incorporated May 26, 1708. In 2010, Hebron was rated #6 in Top Towns in Connecticut with population between 6,500 and 10,000, according to Connecticut Magazine. The villages of Hebron Center, Gilead and Amston are located within Hebron. Amston has its own postal ("zip") code and post office. The remnants of two long since abandoned communities, Grayville and Gay City, are also located in Hebron. The site of the latter is now Gay City State Park. Quilting
Quilting is the term given to the process of joining a minimum of three layers of fabric together either through stitching manually using a needle and thread, or mechanically with a sewing machine or specialised longarm quilting system. An array of stitches is passed through all layers of the fabric to create a three dimensional padded surface. The three layers are typically referred to as the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and the backing. Quilting varies from a purely functional fabric joinery technique to highly elaborate, decorative three dimensional surface treatments.
