Stuart Freedman
Stuart Jay Freedman (January 13, 1944 – November 10, 2012) was an American physicist, known for his experiment testing Bell's inequality proposed to him by John Clauser at the University of California, Berkeley as well as for his contributions to nuclear and particle physics, particularly weak interaction, weak interaction physics. He was a graduate of University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1965 and his PhD in physics in 1972 under Eugene D. Commins, Eugene Commins. While at Berkeley, he worked with fellow graduate student Steven Chu. He was also recipient of 2007 Tom W. Bonner Prize in Nuclear Physics. He held positions at Princeton University, Stanford University, Argonne National Laboratory, the University of Chicago, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Eugene Commins
Eugene David Commins (July 1, 1932 – September 26, 2015) was an American physicist and professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He was named a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1987. He was also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Career Born in New York City, Commins finished his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1958 under Nobel Prize laureate Polykarp Kusch. After serving as a research physicist at the Columbia Radiation Lab, he joined the physics department at Berkeley in 1960 as an assistant professor. KamLAND
The Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND) is an electron antineutrino detector at the Kamioka Observatory, an underground neutrino detection facility in Hida, Gifu, Japan. The device is situated in a drift mine shaft in the old KamiokaNDE cavity in the Japanese Alps. Although located in the Kamioka Observatory, which is part of the University of Tokyo, this project is conducted by a team at Tohoku University. The site is surrounded by 53 Japanese commercial nuclear reactors. Nuclear reactors produce electron antineutrinos (\bar_e) during the decay of radioactive fission products in the nuclear fuel. Like the intensity of light from a light bulb or a distant star, the isotropically-emitted \bar_e flux decreases at 1/R2 per increasing distance R from the reactor. Atsuto Suzuki
is an experimental particle physicist known for his observations of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. Career Suzuki earned his doctorate from Tohoku University in 1974, supervised by Masatoshi Koshiba. In 1982 he was appointed to the faculty of the Tōkyō University. In 1993, he took concurrent positions as professor at the High Energy Physics Laboratory of Tohoku University and professor at the Institute of Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) of Tōkyō University. Having taken part in the Kamiokande-II and Super-Kamiokande neutrino detection experiments, Suzuki was appointed Director of the Research Center for Neutrino Science in 1998 and led the KamLAND neutrino detection experiments.
