Strijdom Square Massacre
Strijdom Square, as it appeared at the time On 15 November 1988, a man named Barend Strydom carried out a shooting spree at Strijdom Square in central Pretoria, South Africa, killing 8 people and injuring 16 others. Seven of the victims were black, while one was Indian. Strydom was later convicted and sentenced to death for the attack. It was one of many shootings during the apartheid struggle. The square itself has since been renamed Lillian Ngoyi Square. The attack The Delmas Treason Trial was ongoing in Pretoria when Strydom, age 23, opened fire on 15 November 1988, killing eight and injuring 16. Perpetrator Barend Hendrik Strydom (born 15 July 1965) was born in Wenen, Natal, South Africa. Strijdom Square
Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom (also spelled Strydom in accordance with Afrikaans spelling; 14 July 1893 – 24 August 1958), also known as Hans Strijdom and nicknamed the Lion of the North or the Lion of Waterberg, was the fifth prime minister of South Africa from 30 November 1954 to his death on 24 August 1958. He was an uncompromising Afrikaner nationalist and a member of the largest, ''baasskap'' (white supremacist) faction of the National Party (South Africa), National Party (NP), who further accentuated the NP's apartheid policies and break with the Union of South Africa in favour of a republic during his rule. Truth And Reconciliation Commission (South Africa)
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was a court-like restorative justice body assembled in South Africa in 1996 after the end of apartheid. Authorised by Nelson Mandela and chaired by Desmond Tutu, the commission invited witnesses who were identified as victims of gross human rights violations to give statements about their experiences, and selected some for public hearings. Perpetrators of violence could also give testimony and request amnesty from both civil and criminal prosecution. The TRC was seen by many as a crucial component of the transition to full and free democracy in South Africa. Despite some flaws, it is generally (although not universally) thought to have been successful. The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation was established in 2000 as the successor organisation of the TRC. The Ladysmith massacre was a mass shooting that occurred in the Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal area on 20 January 1992, in South Africa, perpetrated by Carel Johannes Delport. Most of Delport's victims were black, and in the aftermath racial tensions in the area increased. Delport was subsequently arrested and sentenced to 39 years in prison.
