Strevell, Idaho
Strevell is a ghost town in Cassia County, Idaho, United States, approximately north of the Utah state line and roughly south–southeast of Malta. It is located in the Raft River Valley along the former routing of U.S. Route 30S, and later the former routing of Idaho State Highway 81. Child abduction recovery Sixty years after the school in the community was closed and year after becoming a ghost town, Strevell made national headlines. On July 14, 1983 a four-year-old girl was abducted from a movie theater in Salt Lake City, Utah. Despite a massive search, the child could not be found. Two days later, the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office in Utah received a call from a biker who reported that he had found the girl sitting in the abandoned school building when he stopped for the night. State Highway 81 (SH-81) is a state highway in Cassia County, Idaho. The highway runs for from SH-77 in Malta to U.S. Route 30 (US-30) in Burley. It also has a short spur route connecting the highway to Interstate 84 (I-84) at the Yale Interchange. Prior to its designation as SH-81 in 1972, the highway was part of U.S. Route 30S (US-30S), a multi-state national highway that traveled from Burley to Granger, Wyoming. Route description State Highway 81 begins at an intersection with SH-77 in Malta, located north of the Utah state line. The highway travels north, following the eastern foothills of the Cotterell Mountains and the Raft River valley, through Idahome to Interstate 84, which it parallels for several miles heading northwest. Malta, Idaho
Malta is a village in Cassia County, Idaho, United States. The population was 193 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Burley, Idaho Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The settlers in the Malta area in the early 1880s had no central location for mail delivery. The mail was delivered in open boxes. The Condit family secured a permit from the U.S. Post Office Department to open a post office and name the community. The post office was opened in 1883. Apparently it seemed like an island in a wide expanse of sea, so they named it Malta after the island of Malta in the Mediterranean. A website, created as an Eagle Scout project, includes a history on the majority of the people buried at the Valley Vu Cemetery in Malta.
