''Stratosphere'' is the debut studio album by American slowcore band Duster. The album was released February 24, 1998, on the Up Records label in the United States. The album was primarily written and recorded by members Clay Parton and Canaan Dove Amber, with Jason Albertini contributing drums to three tracks. The band subsequently released the ''Contemporary Movement'' album in 2000, and ''Stratosphere'' was reissued as part of the ''Capsule Losing Contact'' box set in March 2019. Cover The album's cover is a photograph taken from a November 1970 issue of ''Life'' magazine taken by Sam Ehrlich in Alberta, Canada. Acclaim The album got little to no attention on its initial release. Duster (band)
Duster is an American rock band consisting of multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber, and Jason Albertini from San Jose, California. History Formed in 1996 with only Parton and Amber who had previously worked together in bands Mohinder and Calm, they released 2 cassettes in the same year titled On the Dodge and Christmas Dust, respectively, as well as a 7" titled ''Transmission, Flux'' on Up Records released in 1997. Later the next year, Jason Albertini joined the band as a drummer and played on three tracks for their debut album, 1998's ''Stratosphere'', and with 1999's ''1975'' EP, Albertini became much more involved in the group's process, playing many more instruments and sharing recording/producing credits with Parton and Amber. By 2000's ''Contemporary Movement'', he was fully involved in the creative process as a permanent member of the group. ''Contemporary Movement'' is the second studio album by American slowcore band Duster. The album was released in 2000 on Up Records. Unlike Duster's previous album ''Stratosphere'', all three band members were involved in the making of ''Contemporary Movement''. The album was issued on both vinyl and CD. The album's cover art depicts the parking structures at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. ''Contemporary Movement'' was later reissued as part of the ''Capsule Losing Contact'' box set. ''Capsule Losing Contact'' is a compilation album and box set by the American slowcore band Duster. It was released by The Numero Group as part of the 200 Line series on March 22, 2019, and compiles the four previous Duster releases, ''Stratosphere,'' ''Contemporary Movement'', ''Transmission, Flux'' and ''1975'', as well as numerous singles, demos and unreleased material. The album is named after track 9 of the third disc, "Capsule Losing Contact". ''Capsule Losing Contact'''s total print run was 3,000 copies, though it was initially 2,000. The number of copies printed increased due to high demand from Numero customers. Adam Luksetich, the Numero employee who oversaw the Duster set, told '' The Ringer'' that "the idea of a Duster box had been discussed in the office for several years, and that it took some time to bring the members of the group around on the idea." Slowcore
Slowcore is a subgenre of alternative rock and indie rock. The music of slowcore artists is generally characterized by bleak lyrics, downbeat melodies, slower tempos and minimalist arrangements. Slowcore is often used interchangeably with the term sadcore. Characteristics Slowcore is a fusion genre of indie rock and sadcore, characterized by minimal musical backing, played at extremely slow speeds. Slowcore songs often feature "depressing lyrics", according to Listverse. Swedish singer Stina Nordenstam has been described as slowcore because of "her sadly beautiful little-girl whisper" style of singing. Phil Ek is an American record producer, engineer and mixer. Ek began his career in Seattle, Washington in the early 1990s recording live sound in clubs. He then moved into studio recording, recording small projects and demos for local bands. Around this time, Ek was frequently working with influential producer Jack Endino. Up Records was a Seattle based independent record label founded in 1994 by Chris Takino and Rich Jensen. Some of the label's best known artists were 764-Hero, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Quasi and Tad. Chris Takino died of leukemia in 2000. The label was owned and managed by his partner Pete Ritchey until it was licensed to Sub Pop about 2018. The last update to the Up Records website was in 2007.
