Strathearn, Alderley
Strathearn is a heritage-listed cottage at 16 Quarry Road, Alderley, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built between 1920 and 1950. It is also known as Anzac Cottage (no.37). It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 5 February 2007. History This small timber weatherboard house was built as an Anzac Cottage Trust home in 1920, and was occupied by members of the same family until 1998. The Australian public reacted to the many casualties and deaths suffered during World War I by building war memorials and providing homes for wounded veterans and families of those killed. One such project was the Anzac Cottage Trust. Many of the cottages were built on donated land, with volunteers supplying most of the labour, and were built in Australian states. The first was most likely erected in Western Australia by volunteer labour, and officially opened on 15 April 1916. Alderley is a northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Alderley had a population of 6,117 people. Geography Alderley is north-west of the Brisbane CBD. Harry Coyne
John Henry “Harry” Coyne (16 January 186512 June 1926) was an Australian politician who served as a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the Electoral district of Warrego from 1908 until 1923. Early life John Henry Coyne was born on 16 January 1865 in Melbourne, Victoria, the son of John Henry Coyne and his wife Margaret (née Ryan). He left school at 16 and took up fencing, shearing, woolpressing, and many other professions. After finding his feet, he moved to Eulo, Queensland in 1890. He then married Mary Elizabeth Gordon (née Heath), a widow and had six children with her. Toowong Cemetery
Toowong Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1866 and formally opened in 1875. It is Queensland's largest cemetery and is located on forty-four hectares of land at the corner of Frederick Street and Mount Coot-tha Road approximately four and a half kilometres west of Brisbane. It was previously known as Brisbane General Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 31 December 2002. Anzac
The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) was a First World War army corps of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. It was formed in Egypt in December 1914, and operated during the Gallipoli campaign. General William Birdwood commanded the corps, which primarily consisted of troops from the First Australian Imperial Force and 1st New Zealand Expeditionary Force, although there were also British and Indian units attached at times throughout the campaign. Brisbane Festival Hall was an indoor arena located on the southern corner of Albert Street and Charlotte Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It operated from 1910 to 2003, before being demolished to make an apartment building. History The Festival Hall was originally known as Brisbane Stadium, which was built in 1910. In addition to its primary use as a venue to watch boxing, the Brisbane Stadium was also a venue for live concerts. Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole and Johnnie Ray played there in the 1950s. In 1958, the venue was demolished and a new building constructed, by then leading Queensland Construction Company E.J.Taylor & Sons, as part of the Centenary of Queensland. Golden Casket
Golden Casket is the public limited lottery corporation in Queensland, Australia trading on the Australian Stock Exchange. It sells lottery tickets and Instant Scratch-Its ( scratchcards) through newsagents and other convenience stores. Lottery draws are televised on Channel Seven four nights a week. The drawing of the first Golden Casket in 1917 by Queensland Patriotic Fund was to raise money to support veterans of World War I. The operation was soon taken over by the Queensland Government. In 1938, the casket paid for the construction of the new Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital. In April 2007 the Queensland Government sold Golden Casket to gambling company Tattersall's Limited for $530 million, with the proceeds going to the Royal Children's Hospital.
