Storuman Airport
Storuman Airport is an airport about 35 km east of Storuman, Sweden, in the small village of Gunnarn. It had 12,753 passengers in 2006 but since June 2010 there is no scheduled traffic anymore. History It was built as a military airbase (called Gunnarn), hence the relatively long runway. Scheduled passenger traffic to Stockholm began in 1993. The government and the relevant authority decided not to support the traffic financially from autumn 2008. The reason is that the Vilhelmina Airport is located only 75 km (47 mi) from Storuman centre. Air traffic cannot continue without public financial support. The municipality thought it was important to have its own airport so it financed an operator itself from 2009. Storuman Municipality
Storuman Municipality (; sma, Luspie tjïelte; sju, Lusspie kommuvnna) is a municipality in Västerbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Storuman. The parish Stensele was created as late as 1822. It was, together with the parish Tärna, made into a municipality in 1863. In 1903 Tärna was detached to form a municipality of its own. The local government reform of 1971 saw the reunification of Stensele and Tärnaby municipalities, thus forming Storuman Municipality with the name taken from its largest town. Tärnaby, a small village in the municipality, has fostered the internationally famous alpine skiers Ingemar Stenmark, Stig Strand and Anja Pärson. Storuman
Storuman ( sma, Luspie, Ume Sami: ''Lusspie'') is a locality and the seat of Storuman Municipality in Västerbotten County, province of Lapland, Sweden with 2,207 inhabitants in 2010. It is situated by the Ume River, at the southeastern end of Lake Storuman. History It is believed that the first Swedish people who came to the area, were from Vilhelmina to the south and settled here around 1741. The place became known as 'Luspen', derived from a local river of the same name. Until 1912, the population of the village was about 40 inhabitants living in eight farms, but that changed when a railway station was built (Inland Line) around 1924. The village quickly grew and became known as an important centre for hydroelectric power and the timber industry. It later became a popular tourist spot as well.
