Storstrommen (Greenland)
Storstrommen ( da, Storstrømmen, meaning "Large Stream"), is one of the major glaciers in northeastern Greenland. It was named ''Storstrømmen'' because of its size by the ill-fated 1906–08 Denmark Expedition ''(Danmark-Ekspeditionen)'' led by Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen. Geography The mighty Storstrommen is roughly north–south oriented and has a width of over 20 km. Queen Louise Land ''(Dronning Louise Land)'' lies to the west and Daniel Bruun Land to the east. Flowing southwards for over 125 kilometers from the area of the Alabama Nunatak, its front is in the Bredebrae, the confluence of two very large glaciers, the Storstrommen flowing from the north and the almost equally large L. Bistrup Brae from the south. The Storstrommen is part of an extensive glacier system that includes as well the Kofoed-Hansen Glacier ''(Kofoed-Hansen Bræ)'' to the NE and the Borgjokel Glacier to the SW. Glacier morphology, or the form a glacier takes, is influenced by temperature, precipitation, topography, and other factors. The goal of glacial morphology is to gain a better understanding of glaciated landscapes and the way they are shaped. Alabama Nunatak
Alabama Nunatak is a nunatak in the King Frederick VIII Land area of northeastern Greenland. Administratively it is part of the Northeast Greenland National Park zone. History This nunatak was named by Ejnar Mikkelsen after his ship during the 1909-12 Alabama Expedition.''Catalogue of place names in northern East Greenland'', Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland Mikkelsen and Iver Iversen went up the Storstrommen to reach the head of the Danmark Fjord, leaving this nunatak on the left in their arduous dogsled journey over the ice. Few details are known about the circumstances of sighting and mapping of this nunatak, for Mikkelsen's diary, which had been kept in a cache at a rocky islet in Skaer Fjord, was destroyed by a polar bear. Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen
Ludvig Mylius-Erichsen (15 January 1872 – 25 November 1907) was a Danish author, ethnologist, and explorer, from Ringkøbing. He was most notably an explorer of Greenland. Literary expedition With Count Harald Moltke and Knud Rasmussen Mylius-Erichsen formed the Danish Literary Expedition (1902–04) to West Greenland, and, in the early stages (1902), discovered, near Evighedsfjord, two ice-free mountain ranges. The party later proceeded to Cape York and lived for 10 months in native fashion with the Eskimo. The return journey of the expedition to Upernavik across the ice of Melville Bay was the first sledge crossing on record.
