Stony Creek (Sacramento River Tributary)
Stony Creek is a -long tributary of the Sacramento River in Northern California. It drains a watershed of more than on the west side of the Sacramento Valley in Glenn, Colusa, Lake and Tehama Counties. Originating on the eastern slope of the Coast Ranges, Stony Creek flows north through an extensive series of foothill valleys before turning east across the Sacramento Valley to its confluence with the Sacramento River, about west-southwest of Chico. Stony Creek is the second largest tributary to the west side of the Sacramento River; only Cottonwood Creek is larger. Stony Creek is an important source of water for agriculture in the Orland area. The creek has native rainbow trout and historically had significant ocean-going runs of steelhead. Elk Creek, California
Elk Creek is a census-designated place in Glenn County, California. It is located northwest of Willows, at an elevation of 745 feet (227 m). The 2010 census reported that Elk Creek's population was 163. It is home to the smallest public high school in California, which has an enrollment of about 35 students in grades 7 through 12. The Grindstone Indian Rancheria of Wintun-Wailaki Indians, founded in 1907, is located approximately seven miles north of the town and conducts business in Elk Creek. The best-known landmark nearby is a mountain named Bidwell Point. The first post office at Elk Creek opened in 1872. The town of Elk Creek is just north of Stony Gorge Reservoir. Stony Gorge Dam (National ID # CA10194) is a dam in Glenn County, California. The concrete buttress dam was constructed between 1926 and 1928 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation, with a height of 153 feet and 868 feet long at its crest. Structurally it is a relatively early example of an Ambursen-type dam, using contraction joints between all face slabs and buttresses for stability. It impounds Stony Creek for irrigation storage and flood control. Hydroelectric power is also produced. Along with the East Park Dam about fifteen miles upstream, it is part of the Orland Project in the Sacramento valley, one of the Bureau of Reclamation's first generation of water projects. The dam is owned by the Bureau and is operated by the local Orland Unit Water Users` Association. The reservoir it creates, Stony Gorge Reservoir, has a water surface of 1,280 acres, a shoreline of about eighteen miles, and a maximum capacity of 58,500 acre-feet. Snow Mountain Wilderness
The Snow Mountain Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area located north of Santa Rosa, California, USA in the Mendocino National Forest. The U.S. Congress passed the California Wilderness Act of 1984 which created 23 new wilderness areas including Snow Mountain. It lies within the North Coast Range of mountains.
