Stokken
Stokken is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1919 until 1962 when it was merged into the newly-created Moland municipality. Today, the area is a part of the present-day municipality of Arendal in Agder county. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Eydehavn. The Stokken Church was the main church for the small municipality located just outside the town of Arendal. History Stokken was historically a part of the municipality of Østre Moland since the establishment of that municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). The municipality of Stokken was established on 1 July 1919 when the old municipality of Østre Moland was divided into two separate municipalities: Stokken (population: 1,683) and Austre Moland (population: 1,289). Stokken Church
Stokken Church ( no, Stokken kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Arendal Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the village of Saltrød. It is one of the churches for the Moland parish which is part of the Arendal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1878 using plans drawn up by the architect Johan Christoff Friedrich Reuter. The church seats about 400 people. History The church was originally built as a chapel of ease for the Stokken congregation of the Austre Moland parish. The timber-framed church stands on a slope at Stuenes. It was designed by Johan Christoff Friedrich Reuter and the builder Carl Svendsen was the lead builder. The church was consecrated on 13 August 1879. The altarpiece, depicting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, was painted by Hedevig Lund for Austre Moland Church in 1869, but the work was not accepted by the congregation at the time. Some y ... Moland
Moland is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1962 until 1992 when it was merged into the present-day municipality of Arendal which is located in what is now Agder county. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Eydehavn which had a population of 6,011 in 1967 and 8,148 in 1992. Other villages in the municipality included Kilsund, Narestø, Saltrød, Brekka, Strengereid, Vatnebu, and Sagene. The municipality consisted of the mainland area to the north and northeast of the town of Arendal plus the islands of Flostaøya and Tverrdalsøya. This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. In 2002 Erna Solberg, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development at the time, expressed a wish to reduce the current tally with 100. Aust-Agder
Aust-Agder (, en, "East Agder") was a county (''fylke'') in Norway until 1 January 2020, when it was merged with Vest-Agder to form Agder county. In 2002, there were 102,945 inhabitants, which was 2.2% of Norway's population. Its area was . The county's administrative center was the town of Arendal. The county, located along the Skagerrak coast, extended from Gjernestangen at Risør to the Kvåsefjorden in Lillesand. The inner parts of the area included Setesdalsheiene and Austheiene. Most of the population lives near the coast; about 78% of the county's inhabitants live in the five coastal municipalities of Arendal, Grimstad, Lillesand, Tvedestrand, and Risør. Eydehavn
Eydehavn or Eydehamn is a village in the municipality of Arendal in Agder county, Norway. The village is located about northeast of the centre of the Arendal (town), town of Arendal, about northeast of the village of Saltrød, about south of the village of Strengereid, and just across the Tromøysundet strait from Kongshamn on the island of Tromøy (island), Tromøy. The village is named after Sam Eyde, the Norwegian engineer and Business magnate, industrialist. The local sports team is called IL Sørfjell and have teen teams in a variety of sports. Eydehavn has about 1,100 residents as of 2015. History Eydehavn grew up around a smelting factory and an aluminium factory starting around 1912. Austre Moland
Austre Moland (historic: ''Østre Moland'') is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. The roughly municipality existed from 1838 until 1962 when it was merged with several neighboring municipalities to form the new municipality of Moland. It is now part of the municipality of Arendal in Agder county. The administrative centre was at Brekka where the Austre Moland Church is located. Flosta (historic: ''Flougstad'') is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1902 until its dissolution in 1962. It is currently part of the municipality of Arendal in Agder county. The administrative center of Flosta was at Staubø in the village of Kilsund. The municipality primarily encompassed the two islands of Flostaøya and Tverrdalsøya and about on the mainland just north of the islands including the villages of Eikeland, Borås, and Vatnebu. Strengereid
Strengereid is a village in the municipality of Arendal in Agder county, Norway. It is located along the Norwegian County Road 410, about northeast of the village of Eydehavn and just west of the island of Flostaøya. The village of Sagene lies about to the northwest. Agder
Agder is a county (''fylke'') and traditional region in the southern part of Norway. The county was established on 1 January 2020, when the old Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder counties were merged. Since the early 1900s, the term Sørlandet ("south country, south land, southland") has been commonly used for this region, sometimes with the inclusion of neighbouring Rogaland. Before that time, the area was considered a part of Western Norway.
