Stoke On Trent RUFC
Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Union Football Club is a rugby union club located to the east of Barlaston near Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The first XV currently play in Regional 1 Midlands, a sixth tier league in the English rugby union system. Early league history When league rugby was introduced in 1987, Stoke-on-Trent was placed in Midlands Division 1 and won promotion to Area 4 North in their first season. However, after two seasons they were relegated back to tier 5, having narrowly escaped relegation the previous season and in their relegation season of 1989-90 they lost every league game. They won immediate promotion back to Area 4 North and stayed there until they were placed in a new fifth tier - Courage League Division 5 - following a league structure by the RFU. They remained in the North Division until another restructure in 1996 saw them move back to the fourth tier - National 4 North - but after just a single season they were relegated to Midlands Division 1. The Staffordshire Rugby Union is the governing body for the sport of rugby union in the county of Staffordshire in England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for Staffordshire, and administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in the county. Barlaston is a village and civil parish in the Stafford (borough), borough of Stafford in the county of Staffordshire, England. 1989–90 Courage Area League North
The 1989–90 Courage Area League North was the third full season of rugby union within the fourth tier of the English rugby union system, English league system, currently known as National League 2 North, and was the counterpart to Courage Area League South (currently National League 2 South). It would be the last season the division would be called Area League North as it would be renamed National 4 North for the following campaign. The title battle was very strongly contested, but the end it would be Broughton Park RUFC, Broughton Park who would triumph as league champions despite finishing dead level with runners up Morley RFC, Morley, thanks to a far superior points/for against record. Courage League Division 5
Courage Division 5 was a short lived English rugby union competition created as a tier 5 regional competition divided into Courage Division 5 North and Courage Division 5 South. In 1993 the RFU decided to change the whole league structure, with a new national league (Courage Division League 4) replacing the old North / South regional system which would become the aforementioned Courage Division 5. This led to twelve out of thirteen teams in both Courage Division 4 regions dropping into Courage Division 5 while the league winners joined Courage Division 4 along with eight teams from Courage Division 3. This system continued to the end of the 1995–96 season when the league was restructured once again – with Courage Division 4 being abolished as a national competition reverting to the old system only being renamed as National League 4 North and National League 4 South.
