History The Stockton and District Tramways Company was a short lived tramway operator, surviving for only 3 years. In 1893 it took over the services operated by the Stockton and Darlington Steam Tramway Company which had run into financial difficulty. Closure It was unable to make the tramway pay and in 1896 it sold out to the Imperial Tramways Company. Stockton-on-Tees, often simply referred to as Stockton, is a market town in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, England. It is on the northern banks of the River Tees, part of the Teesside built-up area. The town had an estimated population of 84,318 in 2011. It is included in the Tees Valley mayoralty. Norton is a market town in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, England. It stands on higher ground to the south, further away from the River Tees than Stockton town centre. Stockton And Darlington Steam Tramway Company
The Stockton and Darlington Steam Tramways Company operated two separate tramway concerns in the North East of England. The first was a horse-drawn tramway service in Darlington from 1880 to 1904, and the second was a steam tramway in Stockton-on-Tees between 1881 and 1893. Darlington operation The Darlington horse-drawn tramway opened on 10 October 1880. It operated until the Darlington Corporation acquired the concern for modernisation under the control of the Darlington Corporation Light Railways. The price paid for this was £7,600. The lines were leased to C.J. O'Dowd who continued to operate them until 18 August 1903, when the service was withdrawn for reconstruction. Imperial Tramways Company
The Imperial Tramways Company Ltd (1878 to 1930) was created to bring under common management a number of street tramways. Originally based in London, its headquarters moved to Bristol in 1892 and from then on it shared its senior management with Bristol Tramways under the chairmanship of George White. History In 1878 Imperial acquired the street tramway systems in Middlesbrough, Dublin (Southern District), Gloucester and Reading, plus the Corris Railway in Wales. The Gloucester system was sold in 1881, the Dublin system in 1898, and Reading was taken over by the town council in 1901. The Darlington system was added in 1898 and taken over by its local council in 1902.
