Stobo Castle
Stobo Castle is located at Stobo in the Scottish Borders, in the former county of Peeblesshire. The Manor of Stobo was originally owned by the Balfour family. It became the family seat of the Graham-Montgomery Baronets from 1767. The building of the present castle began in 1805 and was completed in 1811 under the supervision of architects Archibald and James Elliot. It is currently operated as a health spa. The house is protected as a category A listed building, while the grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland, the national listing of significant parks and gardens. Stobo Kirk is an ancient church of the Church of Scotland. It is dedicated to St Mungo and is situated near the B712 off the A72 just 6 miles south-west of Peebles in the ancient county of Peeblesshire, now part of the Scottish Borders Council area. History Early history It is believed there has been a church on the site of present-day Stobo Kirk since as early as the 6th century. St Kentigern, otherwise known as St Mungo, founded many churches during his time as Archbishop of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde, and Stobo is believed to be one of his foundations. Stobo was originally the 'plebania' or mother church with subordinate chapelries or churches at Dawyck, Drumelzier, Kingledoors, Tweedsmuir, Broughton, Glenholm, and Lyne. Stobo Railway Station
Stobo railway station was a railway station in the Borders east of Biggar, serving the hamlet of Stobo; a rural community within the Parish of Stobo. History The Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway (S,B&BR) opened part of the line, however the extension to Peebles via Stobo was built by the Caledonian Railway once it had absorbed the S,B&BR. Stobo station was opened in 1864. The "Tinto Express" was run by along this line from Peebles to Edinburgh to compete with the North British Railway's "Peebles-shire Express" which ran via Leadburn. The Caledonian route was longer and the company countered by emphasising the quality of their service. The passenger station closed in 1950Gammell, Appendix and the station has been converted into a private dwelling; the platforms are no longer visible. The Barony of Stobo is a Scottish feudal barony which takes its name from Stobo in the Scottish Borders. The barony has played an important role in Scottish history for almost five centuries. It was closely associated with the rise and fall of Stuart power in Scotland, its granting or forfeiture being used by turns to reward or punish those loyal to the House of Stuart. Origins Claims have been made for the existence of the barony as early as the twelfth century. It is probable an Anglo-Norman lordship emerged during the turbulent period preceding the formation of the Scottish Marches, with its holder exercising customary powers of "pit and gallows, sake and soke, toll, team and infangthief". The Scoto-Norman Sir John Ker(r), the so-called "Hunter of Swynhope", has been tentatively identified as a likely early Lord of Stobo (circa 1140). Charlie Stobo (born 8 March 1995) is an Australian cricketer. He made his first-class debut for New South Wales in the 2016–17 Sheffield Shield season on 5 December 2016. He made his List A debut for Cricket Australia XI in the 2017–18 JLT One-Day Cup on 10 October 2017.
