Stilfs
Stilfs (; it, Stelvio ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the province of South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is located near the northern ramp of the Stelvio Pass. The municipality of Stilfs contains the ''frazioni'' (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Sulden, Trafoi, Gomagoi. History Coat-of-arms The emblem shows an or disc on sable background; inside the disc is a six leaves star of azure, vert and gules alternating. The star symbolizes an ancient nightly custom in wintertime. The emblem was granted in 1969. Stelvio Pass
The Stelvio Pass ( it, Passo dello Stelvio , ''Giogo dello Stelvio'' ; german: Stilfser Joch; ) is a mountain pass in Northern Italy, northern Italy bordering Switzerland at an elevation of Height above mean sea level, above sea level. Sulden
Sulden (; it, Solda ) is a mountain village in South Tyrol, northern Italy. It is a ''frazione'' of the '' comune'' of Stilfs. Geography Sulden lies at the foot of the Ortler, in the Vinschgau valley east of the Stelvio Pass. It is 1900 m above sea level, with a population of 400. History Due to its remote location, in AD 1802, the Austrian newspaper "Innsbrucker Wochenblatt" compared it to "Siberia of Tyrol", "where farmers dine with bears and kids ride on wolves". Roland Thöni
Roland Thöni (17 January 1951 – 4 April 2021) was an Italian alpine ski racer. A cousin of Gustav Thöni, Roland competed on the World Cup circuit during the 1970s. Biography Roland Thöni was born in Trafoi, a ''frazione'' of Stilfs (South Tyrol). His World Cup debut on 7 February 1971 was a top ten finish; he took seventh place in the slalom at Mürren, Switzerland. His best year was 1972, which he opened with a bronze medal in the slalom at the Winter Olympics in Sapporo, finishing behind his cousin Gustav and Francisco Fernández Ochoa, the gold medalist from Spain. In mid-March 1972, Thöni also obtained his only two World cup victories; he won the slaloms at Madonna di Campiglio and Pra-Loup on consecutive days. He did not reach the podium in the following World Cup seasons. A ''frazione'' (plural: ) is a type of subdivision of a ''comune'' (municipality) in Italy, often a small village or hamlet outside the main town. Most ''frazioni'' were created during the Fascist era (1922–1943) as a way to consolidate territorial subdivisions in the country.
