Stephen Yang Xiangtai
Stephen Yang Xiangtai (; 3 January 1923 – 13 October 2021) was a Chinese Roman Catholic prelate, who served as a Bishop Coadjutor (1996–1999) and a Diocesan Bishop (1999–2016) of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Daming (Diocese of Handan by the Chinese government). Life Bishop Yang was born in village Gaocun, Hunan in a Catholic family on 3 January 1923 (by the lunar calendar on 17 November 1922). He joined the theological seminary after a school and a minor seminary education and was ordained a priest on 27 August 1949 in Kaifeng. He worked as a parish priest in different locations and in the time of the Cultural Revolution was detained and imprisoned. On 30 November 1996, he was consecrated as a Coadjutor Bishop by Bishop Peter Chen Bolu and succeeded him after his resignation on 17 September 1999. Catholic Patriotic Association
The Catholic Patriotic Association (), abbreviated CPA, is a state-sanctioned organization of Catholicism in the People's Republic of China. It was established in 1957 after a group of Chinese Catholics met in Beijing with officials from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Religious Affairs Bureau. It is the main organizational body of Catholics in China officially recognized by the Chinese government. It is not recognized by the Vatican. The organization is overseen by the CCP's United Front Work Department (UFWD) following the State Administration for Religious Affairs' absorption into the UFWD in 2018. Hebei
Hebei or , (; alternately Hopeh) is a northern province of China. Hebei is China's sixth most populous province, with over 75 million people. Shijiazhuang is the capital city. The province is 96% Han Chinese, 3% Manchu, 0.8% Hui, and 0.3% Mongol. Three Mandarin dialects are spoken: Jilu Mandarin, Beijing Mandarin and Jin. Handan
Handan is a prefecture-level city located in the southwest of Hebei province, China. The southernmost prefecture-level city of the province, it borders Xingtai on the north, and the provinces of Shanxi on the west, Henan on the south and Shandong on the east. At the 2010 census, its population was 9,174,683 inhabitants whom 2,845,790 lived in the built-up (''or metro'') area made of 5 urban districts. Peter Chen Bolu
Peter Chen Bolu (23 May 1914 – November 5, 2009) was the Chinese bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Daming. Biography Chen was born in 1914. He was first ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1944. He was imprisoned and sent to a hard labor camp during the Cultural Revolution. Chen was secretly ordained the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hongdong by Bishop Francis Han Tingbi in 1986. He was openly installed and ordained as the Chinese bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Handan on May 29, 1988. Unlike other bishops, Chen's appointment was supported both by the Vatican and the government of the People's Republic of China. As bishop, Chen oversaw the construction of the Dazhong Hospital within the diocese, which opened in 1994. He also built ten health care clinics throughout the diocese, which is located in northern China. He remained at that post until his retirement in 1999. Cultural Revolution
The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China (PRC) launched by Mao Zedong in 1966, and lasting until his death in 1976. Its stated goal was to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society.
