Stephen D. Smith
Stephen D. Smith MBE is a Holocaust and genocide specialist who has designed, operated and consulted for many different Holocaust memorial centres. He currently holds the UNESCO Chair on Genocide Education. Early life Smith was born on 15 April 1967, the younger son of Eddie Smith, a Methodist minister and Marina Smith, a teacher. In 1995, he founded the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre in Nottinghamshire with his elder brother James Smith, and together they also founded Aegis Trust in 2000. Upon graduating from the University of London in 1991 with a degree in Theology, Smith attended the Oxford Centre for Hebrew Studies in 1992, and received his Doctorate from the University of Birmingham in 2000, having focused his postgraduate study on the "Trajectory of Memory", examining how Holocaust survivor testimony developed over time. Member Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. Carol Rittner
Carol Rittner (born 1943) is an American nun and Holocaust historian. She is a Distinguished Emerita Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Dr. Marsha Raticoff Grossman Professor of Holocaust Studies at Stockton University. Early life Rittner was born in 1943 and raised in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, to a Catholic mother and Protestant father. She graduated from Bishop McDevitt Catholic High School and College Misericordia (now, Misericordia University. Rittner later earned her Doctor of Education from Pennsylvania State University. Career In 1984, Rittner organized an international conference on the theme "Faith in Humankind: Rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust" for the Holocaust Memorial Council. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD, 27 January) is a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of the Jews and others who suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution. It was first held in January 2001 and has been on the same date every year since. The chosen date is the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union in 1945, the date also chosen for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and some other national Holocaust Memorial Days. In addition to the national event, there are numerous smaller memorial events around the country organised by many different organisations, groups and individuals.
