Stephen Bate
Stephen Stanley Bate (born 24 August 1977) is a New Zealand–British Paralympic cyclist who competes in tandem races as an athlete with a visual impairment. Since 2014, Bate has been piloted by Adam Duggleby. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, the pair won gold in the men's individual pursuit B and men's road time trial B, and bronze in the men's road race B. In 2018 Bate and Duggleby won the UCI World Para-cycling Tandem B Individual Pursuit and the UCI World Para-cycling Tandem B Individual Time Trial to become double World Champions. The pair are current World Tandem B Time Trial champions, after winning the title in 2021 at the UCI Paracycling World Championships in Cascais, Portugal. Apeldoorn (; Dutch Low Saxon: ) is a municipality and city in the province of Gelderland in the centre of the Netherlands. It is located about 60 km east of Utrecht, 60 km west of Enschede, 25 km north of Arnhem and 35 km south of Zwolle. Karen Darke
Karen Darke, , FRSGS (born 25 June 1971) is a British paralympic cyclist, paratriathlete, adventurer and author. She competed at the 2016 Rio Paralympics winning Gold in the Women's road time trial, following her success in the 2012 London Paralympics winning a silver medal in the Women's road time trial H1-2. Darke was born in Halifax, Yorkshire. She is paralysed from the chest down following an accident, aged 21, whilst sea cliff climbing. In 1996 she first hand-cycled across the Himalaya from Kazakhstan to Pakistan, through the Indian Himalaya in 2005 and 2018, and across the Tibetan Plateau in 2014. In 2002 she was part of a team sea kayaking from Canada to Alaska (Vancouver to Juneau, 10 weeks kayaking). In 2006, she took part in an expedition which crossed Greenland's ice cap whilst sitting on skis using her arms and poles to cover the 372-mile crossing. Adam Duggleby
Adam Christopher John Duggleby (born 16 October 1984) is a British cyclist. He represented Great Britain at the 2016 Rio Paralympics as a sighted pilot for visually impaired cyclist Stephen Bate, whom he was paired with in January 2014. The pair won gold in the men's individual pursuit B and men's road time trial B, and bronze in the men's road race B. In 2017 Duggleby broke two Cycling Time Trials national records: tricycle 10 miles and 100 miles bicycle. Duggleby also won the British Best All-Rounder time trial competition for 2017. He then won the 2018 CTT national 12hr time trial championship, breaking the national record in the process. Visual impairment, also known as vision impairment, is a medical definition primarily measured based on an individual's better eye visual acuity; in the absence of treatment such as correctable eyewear, assistive devices, and medical treatment– visual impairment may cause the individual difficulties with normal daily tasks including reading and walking.
