The Polygonaceae are a family of flowering plants known informally as the knotweed family or smartweed—buckwheat family in the United States. Plants are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. In biology, a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity.
