Schizomida, which are commonly known as short-tailed whip scorpions. They are mostly found in North and Central America, but their parthenogenetic lifestyle allows them to live in other parts of the world in temperate climates. They are able to thrive in different parts of the world, especially in caves, forests, fallen logs, and abandoned nests of termites.Lira, Afa. “First Record of Stenochrus Portoricensis Chamberlin, 1922 (Arachnida: Schizomida: Hubbardiidae) for the Pernambuco State, Brazil.” Brazilian Journal of Biology = Revista Brasileira De Biologia., vol. 75, no. 3, 2015, pp. 766–767., doi:10.1590/1519-6984.21113 ... Species
In biology, a species is the basic unit of classification and a taxonomic rank of an organism, as well as a unit of biodiversity. A species is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction. Other ways of defining species include their karyotype, DNA sequence, morphology, behaviour or ecological niche. In addition, paleontologists use the concept of the chronospecies since fossil reproduction cannot be examined. The most recent rigorous estimate for the total number of species of eukaryotes is between 8 and 8.7 million. However, only about 14% of these had been described by 2011. All species (except viruses) are given a two-part name, a "binomial". The first part of a binomial is the genus to which the species belongs. The second part is called the specific name or the specific epithet (in botanical nomenclature, also sometimes i ... Hubbardiidae
Hubbardiidae is a family of arachnids, superficially resembling spiders. It is the larger of the two extant families of the order, Schizomida, and is divided into two subfamilies. The family is based on the description published by Orator F. Cook in 1899, and was previously named as Schizomidae.''Australian Faunal Directory'' (Harvey 2002) The American Arachnological Society assigns the common name hubbardiid shorttailed whipscorpion to members of this family The subfamily of Megaschizominae contains only one genus endemic to Southern Africa, while the rest belong to the subfamily Hubbardiinae. Seven of these genera are found in Australia (of which five are endemic): '' Draculoides'', '' Julattenius'', '' Notozomus'', '' Attenuizomus'' and '' Brignolizomus''. Five genera are found in Mexico, three of which are endemic ('' Pacal'', '' Mayazomus'' and '' Sotanostenochrus'').Montaño Moreno & Francke 2009:33; Harvey 2003:112–123 Genera , the World Schizomida Catalog accepts the ... Ralph Vary Chamberlin
Ralph Vary Chamberlin (January 3, 1879October 31, 1967) was an American biologist, ethnographer, and historian from Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a faculty member of the University of Utah for over 25 years, where he helped establish the School of Medicine and served as its first dean, and later became head of the zoology department. He also taught at Brigham Young University and the University of Pennsylvania, and worked for over a decade at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, where he described species from around the world. Chamberlin was a prolific taxonomist who named over 4,000 new animal species in over 400 scientific publications. He specialized in arachnids (spiders, scorpions, and relatives) and myriapods (centipedes, millipedes, and relatives), ranking among the most prolific arachnologists and myriapodologists in history. He described over 1,400 species of spiders, 1,000 species of millipedes, and the majority of North American centipedes, althoug ...
