Steinbach Hawks
The Steinbach Hawks were a Canadian junior 'A' ice hockey team based in Steinbach, Manitoba that played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) from 1985 to 1988. After only three seasons in the MJHL, the Hawks took leave of absence following the 1987-1988 season and formally ceased operations two years later. The league added the Winnipeg-based Southeast Thunderbirds for the 1988-1989 season to counter the loss of the Hawks. That team eventually relocated to Steinbach in 2009 is today known as the Steinbach Pistons. Steinbach () ( Plautdietsch: /ˈʃte̞nbah/ or /ˈʃte̞nbax/) is a city located about south-east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Steinbach is the third-largest city in Manitoba, with a population of 17,806, and the largest community in the Eastman region. The city is bordered by the Rural Municipality of Hanover to the north, west, and south, and the Rural Municipality of La Broquerie to the east. Steinbach was first settled by Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from the Russian Empire in 1874, whose descendants continue to have a significant presence in the city today. The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) is a Junior 'A' ice hockey league operating in the Canadian province of Manitoba and one of nine member leagues of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The MJHL consists of thirteen teams all based within the province of Manitoba, eight of which qualify for each year's playoffs. The playoff champion is awarded the Turnbull Cup, the Junior 'A' championship trophy for the province of Manitoba. The winner of the MJHL playoffs (Turnbull Cup) competes against the champion from Saskatchewan for the ANAVET Cup and a berth in the Centennial Cup (formerly known as the Royal Bank Cup). Steinbach Centennial Arena
The T.G. Smith Arena is an ice hockey arena in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada It is adjacent to the site of the Southeast Events Centre, which is currently under construction. The Steinbach Curling Club is also adjacent to the arena. History Prior to 2023, the T.G. Smith Arena was part of the T.G. Smith Centre. The original part of the complex was the ''Steinbach Centennial Arena'', opened in 1967 and accommodated up to 1,250 spectators (seated and standing room combined). A second indoor rink was constructed in the mid-1990s after which the entire complex was named after the T.G. Smith Centre, after a local banker and supporter of local sport programs. The Centennial Arena was demolished in June 2023 to make way for the new Southeast Events Centre, leaving the existing arena as the remaining part of the complex. The Steinbach Pistons are a Junior "A" ice hockey team from Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. They are members of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, which is a member of the Canadian Junior Hockey League. History Southeast Thunderbirds/T-Birds/Blades The MJHL granted an expansion team to the Southeast Tribal Council, a group of First Nation bands in southeastern Manitoba, to begin play in the 1988–89 season. The team was known as the Southeast Thunderbirds and played out of the Notre Dame Arena in Winnipeg. The team was renamed the Southeast Blades in 1992. After taking a leave of absence for the 1996–97 season, the Blades moved northeast of Winnipeg to Sagkeeng First Nation. The Winkler Flyers are a Manitoba Junior Hockey League team playing out of the Winkler Arena in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada. The Flyers entered the MJHL as an expansion team for the 1980-81 season and have won three Turnbull Cup Championships as Manitoba Junior 'A' Champions (1991, 1992, & 1998) as well as the ANAVET Cup in 1992.
