Stefano Palmieri
Stefano Palmieri (born 18 September 1964) is a Sammarinese politician, who served as a Captain Regent of San Marino together with Matteo Ciacci from 1 April 2018 to 1 October 2018. He had previously served in the same position for the semester from 1 October 2009 to 1 April 2010, alongside Francesco Mussoni. Life Member of the Popular Alliance (Alleanza Popolare), Palmieri has been in the Grand and General Council since 2006. He was one of the founders of "Movimento Biancoazzurro" which merged into Alleanza Popolare in 2005. Palmieri is a certified accountant, married and father of two sons. Popular Alliance (San Marino)
The Popular Alliance ( it, Alleanza Popolare, AP) was a Liberalism, liberal-centrist political party in San Marino. The party formed a coalition with the Union for the Republic (San Marino), Union for the Republic for the 2016 Sammarinese general election, and following their electoral success the two parties created a new party, Future Republic. The Captains Regent (Italian: ''Capitani reggenti'') are the two heads of state of the Republic of San Marino. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council, the country's legislative body. Normally the Regents are chosen from opposing parties and they serve a six-month term. The investiture of the captains regent takes place on 1 April and 1 October every year. This tradition dates back at least to 1243. The practice of dual heads of government (diarchy) is derived directly from the customs of the Roman Republic, equivalent to the consuls of ancient Rome. The Grand and General Council ( it, Consiglio Grande e Generale) is the parliament of San Marino. The council has 60 members elected for a five-year term. History From the fifth century San Marino was ruled by an assembly composed by all the family heads known as the Arengo. However, as population grew, such a body became more and more dysfunctional, with its functioning being crippled by feuds between families. While the exact timing is unknown, there is historical evidence that by the early 13th century the citizens of San Marino elected an assembly called Council of the LX, which was also known as the Grand and General Council.
