The Bundestag (, "Federal Diet (assembly), Diet") is the lower house of the Germany, German Federalism in Germany, federal parliament. It is the only constitutional body of the federation directly elected by the German people. The Bundestag was established by Title III of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany () in 1949 as one of the legislative bodies of Germany, the other being the German Bundesrat, Bundesrat. Holger Becker (born 15 July 1964) is a German businessman and politician of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) who has been serving as a member of the Bundestag since the 2021 German federal election, representing the constituency of Jena – Sömmerda – Weimarer Land I. Early life and education Becker studied physics at the University of Heidelberg and at University of Western Australia in Perth from 1985 to 1991. He subsequently worked as a research associate at the University of Heidelberg and earned a doctorate (Dr. rer.nat.) in 1995. He was a research associate at Imperial College London from 1995 to 1997. Jena – Sömmerda – Weimarer Land I is an electoral constituency (German: ''Wahlkreis'') represented in the Bundestag. It elects one member via first-past-the-post voting. Under the current constituency numbering system, it is designated as constituency 190. The Landtag of Thuringia is the parliament of the German federal state of Thuringia. It convenes in Erfurt and currently consists of 88 members from five parties. According to the free state's constitution, the primary functions of the Landtag are to pass laws, elect the Minister-President and control the government of Thuringia. Elections Elections are held every five years using the German Mixed-member proportional representation (MMP) system, with an election threshold of 5% vote share to receive any seats. All German citizens 18 years of age or older living in Thuringia are entitled to vote. If a party wins more constituency seats than its overall share of the vote, the overall size of the Landtag increases because of these overhang and leveling mandates.
