Steeton, West Yorkshire
Steeton is a village in the City of Bradford metropolitan borough, West Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated approximately south-east from Skipton, north-west from Keighley and just south of the A629 road. The village is part of Steeton with Eastburn civil parish. History The village is mentioned in the Domesday book along with Eastburn, Grassington, Linton and Threshfield as belonging to Gamelbar. In 1752–53 the Keighley and Kendal Turnpike followed Hollins Bank Road with the toll bar situated at the bottom of Steeton Bank. An inn named the “Pack Horse” was located nearby. The first toll gate on the turnpike was set up in 1753 at "Steeton Cross" at the foot of the hill. When the new road past Hawkcliffe Farm was made, the bar was removed to what is now called "Old Bar-house" to intercept the traffic by Old Bar-house Lane as well as that by the new road. Silsden
Silsden is a town and civil parish in the City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, on the River Aire and Leeds and Liverpool Canal between Keighley and Skipton, which had a population of 8,268 at the 2011 Census. The parish includes the hamlet of Brunthwaite. History Silsden was mentioned in the 1086 ''Domesday Book'' as "Siglesdene", and as the most important village in Craven. Generally an agricultural area, the Industrial Revolution had a significant impact on West Yorkshire, including Silsden. The town hosted a number of mills none of which now operate in their original form. There is still industry in the town, some in old mill buildings and some in a new industrial estate between the town and the river. The town retains a very small amount of manufacturing. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal became a key element of local infrastructure upon its completion in 1816. Steeton And Silsden Railway Station
Steeton and Silsden railway station serves the village of Steeton and the town of Silsden in West Yorkshire, England. It is situated closer to Steeton than to Silsden, and is on the Airedale Line. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by Northern. History Steeton & Silsden was opened by the Leeds and Bradford Extension Railway in December 1847, and was later re-sited in march 1892. The station was closed on 20 March 1965 (a victim of the Beeching Axe) but reopened in 1990. The current (staggered) station platforms built by British Rail are located on the site of the old A6068 level crossing, which was replaced by the current road bridge in 1988 as part of the Aire Valley Trunk Road project. Skipton Girls' High School, founded in 1886 by the Petyt Trust, is an all-girls selective grammar school situated in Skipton, North Yorkshire, England. Ermysted's Grammar School is an 11-18 boys voluntary aided grammar school in Skipton, North Yorkshire, England. It was founded by Peter Toller in the 15th century and is the seventh oldest state school in Britain. The first official record of the school was seen in Peter Toller's will in 1492; the school records its establishment as the same year, though its history could possibly be dated to 1468. The school operates a house system. The four houses—Toller, Ermysted, Petyt, and Hartley—are named after key figures in the school's history. Cross Hills is a village in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England that is situated halfway between Skipton and Keighley. The village is at the centre of a built-up area that includes the adjoining settlements of Glusburn, Kildwick, Eastburn and Sutton-in-Craven. Cross Hills is the newer part of the civil parish now called Glusburn and Cross Hills, historically known as Glusburn. Geography Cross Hills is in Airedale at a point where the River Aire bends east from its north–south course. Airedale General Hospital
Airedale General Hospital is an NHS district General Hospital based in Steeton with Eastburn, West Yorkshire, England and is operated by the Airedale NHS Foundation Trust. Airedale was opened for patients in July 1970 and officially opened by the Prince of Wales on 11 December of the same year. The hospital covers a wide area including Keighley, Skipton and parts of the Yorkshire Dales and eastern Lancashire. As of 2021, the hospital had links for neurosurgical emergencies with Leeds General Infirmary. The hospital provides approximately 324 beds. History The hospital was planned as far back as 1963 with many sites being optioned including Silsden and also a site nearer to Skipton. Airedale is a geographic area in Yorkshire, England, corresponding to the river valley or dale of the River Aire. The valley stretches from the river's origin in Aire Head Springs, Malham which is in the Yorkshire Dales, down past Skipton on to Keighley, Bingley and Shipley through to Leeds and Castleford and on to join the River Ouse at Airmyn. This valley is of great topographic significance as it provides low-altitude passes through the mid Pennines to the west coast known as the Aire Gap. History The upper Aire valley was formed 12,000 years ago by a retreating glacier. A moraine formed in the Cononley area and the lake stretched as far north as Gargrave.
