Stechlin
Stechlin is a municipality in the Oberhavel district, in Brandenburg, Germany. Geography Stechlin is part of the northern border of Brandenburg, at the start of the Mecklenburg Lake District. It is part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park, surrounded by the Menzer Forest and has many lakes in the area. The most famous is Lake Stechlin (Stechlinsee) which is a protected area. Lake Stechlin
Lake Stechlin or Großer Stechlinsee is a lake in Landkreis Oberhavel, Brandenburg, Germany. At an elevation of 60 m, its surface area is 4.52 km². The Stechlin cisco, a dwarfed fish, is found only in this lake. Theodor Fontane's last novel, '' Der Stechlin'', was set in its vicinity. Stechlinsee has a maximum depth of 69.5 metres, making it the deepest lake in the State of Brandenburg. It is also one of the clearest with a visual depth of up to 11 metres (average 6 metres). Roofensee
Roofensee is a lake in Oberhavel, Brandenburg, Germany. It has a surface area of 0.56 km². Overview Roofensee (Lake Roofen) is located in the county of Oberhavel in the north of Brandenburg, about 6 km from the border of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Oberhavel
Oberhavel is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the northern part of Brandenburg, Germany. Its neighbouring districts are (clockwise from the north): Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the districts of Uckermark and Barnim, the ''Bundesland'' of Berlin, and the districts of Havelland and Ostprignitz-Ruppin. Geography The district is located on the upper course of the Havel river from its source to the outskirts of Berlin. Neuroofen
Neuroofen is a small hamlet of around 25 people in the Stechlin district of Germany. It lies in the area between Menz and Altglobsow and is surrounded by the forests and lakes of the Furstenberg Conservation Area and the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park. History In 1851 the owner of the Neuglobsow glassworks began to buy up land in the surrounding area. Neuroofen lay in the midst of this land. The 560-acre estate was sold in 1896/99 to the Prussian Forest Administration, which moved the forestry office and various establishments there. In the middle of the 18th century the Prussian Administration asked what could be done with the Menzer Forest. The Head Forestry Officer said that there was so much wood that it could never be used up. 30 years later nearly all the wood had been burnt in the chimneys of Berlin. Erwin Strittmatter
Erwin Strittmatter (14 August 1912 – 31 January 1994) was a German writer. Strittmatter was one of the most famous writers in the GDR. Biography Strittmatter was born the son of a baker and foods wholesaler. Between 1924 and 1930 he attended the secondary school in Spremberg which has subsequently been named after him. His left his school early due to shortage of money, and at the age of 17 he started an apprenticeship as a baker. Later Strittmatter worked as baker, waiter, chauffeur, zookeeper and unskilled laborer. In 1940 he volunteered to the Waffen-SS but was rejected. Instead, in March 1941 he was drafted into the Ordnungspolizei in the ''SS-Polizei-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 18'', which operated under the control of the Waffen-SS and which was involved in the deportation of Jews from Athens. Menz (Stechlin)
Menz or Manz ( am, መንዝ, romanized: ''Mänz'') is a former subdivision of Ethiopia, located inside the boundaries of the modern Semien Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region. William Cornwallis Harris described Menz as lying "westward" of Gedem but between that former province and Marra Biete. Donald Levine explains that Menz was divided into three parts: Mama Meder in the center; Lalo Meder in the south; and Gera Meder in the north. Further, he defines its boundaries as "the Mofar River in the south, the Adabay and Wanchet rivers in the west, the Qechene River in the north, and in the east a long chain of mountains which pour forth the waters that drain across Manz and which divide it from the lowlands of Efrata, Gedem, and Qawat."
