Stax Music Academy
Stax Music Academy is an after school and summer music school in South Memphis, Tennessee. The program has included instruction from many prominent musicians. Alumni include Kris Thomas, a top ten contender on The Voice and Kirby Lauryen, a Roc Nation songwriter and performing artist who was a winner of the 2017 "ASCAP Women Behind the Music" Award and is the first graduate to serve on the board of directors of the Soulsville Foundation. Kris Thomas (born December 17, 1984) is an American singer. He competed in Season 4 of ''The Voice'', earning a spot on Team Shakira and reaching the Top 10. His self-titled debut EP was released on December 17, 2013. Early life Kris Thomas was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He began performing publicly at the age of 14 with his church choir. He joined the Young Actors Guild, where he gained experience in stage performance and experimented in acting. The following year Thomas joined the Stax Music Academy, where he became a member and lead vocalist of StreetCorner Harmonie. Kirby Lauryen Dockery, also known by the stage names Kirby (stylized as KIRBY) and Kirby Lauryen, is an American singer-songwriter. She has written pop songs such as "FourFiveSeconds" performed by Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney. Kirby is an independent artist and released her first album, ''Sis'', in 2020. Stax Museum
The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is a museum located in Memphis, Tennessee, at 926 East McLemore Avenue, the original location of Stax Records. Stax launched and supported the careers of artists such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Albert King, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, Jean Knight, Mable John, and countless others including spoken word and comedy by Rev. Stax Records is an American record company, originally based in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, the label changed its name to Stax Records in 1961. It also shared its operations with sister label Volt Records. Stax was influential in the creation of Southern soul and Memphis soul music. Stax also released gospel, funk, and blues recordings. Renowned for its output of blues music, the label was founded by two siblings and business partners, Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton (STewart/AXton = Stax). The Soulsville Charter School
The Soulsville Charter School (TSCS) is a charter school in South Memphis, Tennessee. It is located at 1115 College Street. The entire 2014 graduating class was accepted at 4-year colleges. Soulsville Charter School serves about 600 students in grades 6–12. It opened in 2005. The official nickname is The Soulsville Revolution, the school's teams compete as the Tornadoes, and the school colors are Royal Purple and Silver. The school is operated as part of the Soulsville Foundation and Soulsville USA along with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and the Stax Music Academy.
