Star Plaudit
Star Plaudit (1948–c. 1970) nicknamed Red was a rodeo stock horse who excelled in steer wrestling and barrel racing. He was inducted into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2015. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2017. Background Star Plaudit, nicknamed "Red", was born in 1948. Red was a bay gelding. World champion barrel racer Sherry Combs Johnson first saw Red when her husband and his brother bought the horse together. Red was a steer wrestling horse. Red was 8 years old then. The brothers competed on him for a time, but then the Johnsons bought his brother out. Combs Johnson needed a barrel horse. Red took to barrel racing almost instantly. Combs Johnson believed that the steer wrestling pattern was responsible for his easy transition and ability to run hard without many mistakes. Rodeo
Rodeo () is a competitive equestrian sport that arose out of the working practices of cattle herding in Spain and Mexico, expanding throughout the Americas and to other nations. It was originally based on the skills required of the working vaqueros and later, cowboys, in what today is the western United States, western Canada, and northern Mexico. Today, it is a sporting event that involves horses and other livestock, designed to test the skill and speed of the cowboys and cowgirls. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) is the largest rodeo organization in the world. Plaudit (Quarter Horse)
Plaudit (1895–1919) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. A descendant of English Triple Crown champion, West Australian, he was bred by Dr. John D. Neet, owner of Kindergarten Stud at Versailles, Kentucky. Plaudit is best known for winning the 1898 Kentucky Derby. Conditioned by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame trainer Edward D. Brown, racing at age two Plaudit won four of his twelve starts. After finishing fourth in the Futurity Stakes at Sheepshead Bay Race Track, he was bought by noted Kentucky horseman, John E. Madden and in a race for older horses in September, defeated the 1896 Kentucky Derby winner Ben Brush. As a three-year-old, Plaudit was ridden by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey, Willie Simms in the 24th edition of the Kentucky Derby. Bryan, Texas
Bryan is a city and the county seat of Brazos County, Texas, United States. It is located in the heart of the Brazos Valley (East and Central Texas). The All-Around is an award given to a rodeo competitor who is most successful in two or more events. Most individual rodeos and championships determine the winner of this award at the conclusion of the other events or championships. Championships The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) All-Around World Championship is awarded at the Thomas & Mack Center at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas, Nevada, held every December. The PRCA competitor who wins the most prize money in a year while competing in at least two events, earning a minimum of $3,000 in each event, wins the all-around world championship. All of the events for the NFR are held at the Thomas & Mack Center, except the steer roping, which is called the National Finals Steer Roping (NFSR) and is held at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas. Sherry Combs Johnson
Sherry Combs Johnson (August 16, 1938 – August 2, 2023) was an American ProRodeo Hall of Fame barrel racer. In 1962, she won the World Barrel Racing Championship at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Fort Worth, Texas. Life Sherry Combs Johnson was born Sherry Price on August 16, 1938, in Duncan, Oklahoma. Combs and her ProRodeo Hall of Fame sister, Florence Youree, grew up on their father's ranch near Addington, Oklahoma. The sisters were the only children of rancher John Henry Price. Youree always said they worked on his ranch "as his boys". They had his love of horses and rodeo. Youree met Dale Youree as a teenager. Dale was a tie-down roper competing on the college circuit and the Rodeo Cowboy Association (later the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association). They got married in 1950. Stock Horse
A stock horse is a horse of a type that is well suited for working with livestock, particularly cattle. The related cow pony or cow horse is a historic phrase, still used colloquially today, referring to a particularly small agile cattle-herding horse; the term dates to 1874. Bay (horse)
Bay is a hair coat color of horses, characterized by a reddish-brown or brown body color with a black point coloration on the mane, tail, ear edges, and lower legs. Bay is one of the most common coat colors in many horse breeds. The black areas of a bay horse's hair coat are called "black points", and without them, a horse is not a bay horse. Black points may sometimes be covered by white markings; however such markings do not alter a horse's classification as "bay". Bay horses have dark skin – except under white markings, where the skin is pink. Genetically, bay occurs when a horse carries both the Agouti gene and a black base coat.
