Stan Hodgson
Stanley Arthur Murray Hodgson (14 May 1928 – 25 March 2015) was an English rugby union player who played in the Hooker position. Hodgson played club rugby for Durham City RFC, was capped eleven times for the England national team, and was a member of the British Lions team that toured in 1962. He made 72 appearances for the Durham County representative team and played four times for the Barbarians invitational team. Early life Stanley Hodgson was born in Durham on 14 May 1928 to George and Mable. His mother Mable died when Stan was three months old, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother, aunts and uncles. Hodgson was educated at Whinny Hill school, and after leaving took up a job at a carpet factory. He married Doreen Smith, with whom he had four children. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. 1962 British Lions Tour To South Africa
In 1962 the British Lions rugby union team toured Southern and Eastern Africa. Overall the tourists played twenty-five matches, winning sixteen, losing five and drawing four. The Lions were unsuccessful in the test series against , losing by three matches to nil with one match drawn. The first three tests were close; the first match was drawn 3–3 and South Africa won the second 3–0 and the third 8–3. The fourth test resulted in a bigger win for South Africa, 34–14. The tour included games against Rhodesia (which would become Zimbabwe), South West Africa (future Namibia, then part of South Africa) and East Africa in Kenya; winning all three. The Lions won all their non-international matches except for those against Northern Transvaal and Eastern Transvaal. The touring party was captained by Arthur Smith. Durham City RFC
Durham City Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club based in the city of Durham, County Durham. The first XV currently play in North 1 East, a sixth tier league in the English rugby union system. The club runs several senior teams, a colts side and the full range of junior sides. League history When league rugby was introduced in 1987, Durham City was allocated a place in the fourth tier, playing in Area 4 North, ending the first season as runners-up. The club stayed at that level until 1993 when a league restructure by the RFU saw the club placed in a new fifth tier - Courage League Division 5. However the club was relegated from that league after just one season and the club has subsequently played in the regional leagues, fluctuating between North 1 East and Durham/Northumberland 1.
