Stainton, Richmondshire
Stainton is a hamlet and civil parish in the North Yorkshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It is located just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park, in Swaledale. The population of the parish was estimated at 10 in 2016. It lies close to the army training camp of Wathgill in the adjoining civil parish of Walburn. A large part of the parish consists of Ministry of Defence ranges and training areas. It was historically a township in the parish of Downholme which was part of the Hang West wapentake A hundred is an administrative division that is geographically part of a larger region. North Yorkshire is a unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, Yorkshire and the Humber, England. It covers seven former districts: Craven, Hambleton, Harrogate, Scarborough, Richmondshire, Ryedale and Selby. Richmond is a market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, and the administrative centre of the district of Richmondshire. Yorkshire Dales National Park
The Yorkshire Dales National Park is a national park in England covering most of the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the park is in North Yorkshire, with a sizeable area in Westmorland (Cumbria) and a small part in Lancashire. The park was designated in 1954, and extended in 2016. Over 95% of the land in the Park is under private ownership; there are over 1,000 farms in this area. In late 2020, the park was named as an International Dark Sky Reserve. Swaledale
Swaledale is one of the northernmost dales (valleys) in Yorkshire Dales National Park, located in northern England. It is the dale of the River Swale on the east side of the Pennines in North Yorkshire. Geographical overview Swaledale runs broadly from west to east, from the high moors on the Cumbria–Yorkshire boundary at the watershed of Northern England to the market town of Richmond, where the dale meets the lowlands. Wathgill
Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and military town south of Richmond, North Yorkshire, England. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of around 13,000 in 2017 and covering over 2,400 acres (about 10 km2). Under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, its population is expected to grow to over 25,000, making it the largest population centre in the local area. Walburn is a hamlet and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It is located in lower Swaledale, south-west of Richmond. The population of the parish was estimated at 10 in 2016. The army training camp of Wathgill is in the parish. History The toponym is derived from the Old English ''wala'' "Britons or Welshmen" and ''burna'' "stream", indicating the presence of Britons in the area when the English arrived. Downholme is a village and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately west from the market town of Richmond and west from the county town of Northallerton. The village lies close to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. The population as taken in the ONS Census of 2011 was less than 100, so details are included in the parish of Hudswell. Hang West was a Wapentake (Hundred) in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The Wapentake measured across (from west to east) and was from north to south.
