Stadtpolizei
Municipal police, city police, or local police are law enforcement agencies that are under the control of local government. This includes the municipal government, where it is the smallest administrative subdivision. They receive funding from the city budget, and may have fewer legal powers than the "state paid" police. These police forces usually report to a mayor or a local police board. Historical development Historically, the role of the municipal police of local civic protection was carried out by municipal guards. Today, some formations of municipal police still carry the name of the city/communal/municipal guard. Municipal Police (Austria)
The Gemeindewachkörper (german: Community Security Corps) are the municipal police forces of communities in Austria. They are called ''Stadtpolizei'' (for city police). All communities, except statutory cities, are allowed to maintain their own municipal police. Legal basis The Austrian Constitution allows the municipalities to maintain a security force to enforce the laws and regulations, which are usually carried out by local authorities: *local security police *local event police *local traffic police *local market police As the federal police, this legal body is formally an auxiliary body of the administrative authority as well. Exceeding the municipal territory is only permitted, if necessary measures could otherwise not be set in time; such interlocutory action must be reported immediately to the federal police. The security policing act of 1999 expanded the competencies of the local authorities. However, ''Gemeindesicherheitswache'' in the sense of the constitution can on ...

Municipal Police (Germany)
''Stadtpolizei'' were municipal police forces of some cities in Germany. The term ''Stadtpolizei'' is still used in some German states to denote local order enforcement offices of municipal authorities with limited police powers. History After 1945, there were many local and city police forces, such as the Munich Police Force, throughout Germany. Small towns and rural areas that could not or did not want to afford their own police force were covered by the ''Landpolizei'' which was a rural police force organised by the state government. This decentralised system was forced by the US/British-Military Governments after World War II. However, it was not effective in fighting the rise of organised crime and terrorism ( Baader-Meinhof/RAF). So the local and city police forces were merged with the rural gendarmeries (German: ''Landpolizei'', ''Landjägerei'' or ''Gendarmerie'') to form the state police forces (German: ''Landespolizei'') in every single state, during the major reorg ...

In German speaking countries the term Ordnungsamt, literally translated "Order Office", is widely used. Law Enforcement In Canada
Law enforcement in Canada is the responsibility of police services, special constabularies, and civil law enforcement agencies, which are operated by every level of government, some private and Crown corporations, and First Nations. In contrast to the United States or Mexico, and with the exception of the Unité permanente anticorruption (English: Permanent Anti-corruption Unit) in Quebec and the Organized Crime Agency of British Columbia, there are no organizations dedicated exclusively to the investigation of criminal activity in Canada. Criminal investigations are instead conducted by police services, which maintain specialized criminal investigation units in addition to their community safety and emergency response mandates. Canada's provinces are responsible for the development and maintenance of police forces and special constabularies, and every province except Newfoundland and Labrador downloads this responsibility to municipalities, which can establish their own po ...

Early origins An early reference to a watch can be found in the Bible where the Prophet Ezekiel states that it was the duty of the watch to blow the horn and sound the alarm. (Ezekiel 33:1-6) The Roman Empire made use of the Praetorian Guard and the Vigiles, literally the watch.
