St Reims
St Reims (foaled 9 November 1999 in New Zealand) is a thoroughbred racehorse who won the New Zealand Derby in 2002. A million-dollar yearling, big things were always expected of the son of Zabeel, and although he didn't break his maiden until his fifth start he soon started to live up to expectations. A runaway win in the Avondale Guineas at his last start before the Derby ensured that he would start favourite in the Classic, and he didn't disappoint. Given an excellent ride out in front by Greg Childs, the colt was never headed and scored a narrow but authoritative win. After the Derby his career went downhill. After disappointing performances in an autumn Sydney campaign, St Reims failed to win a single race as a four-year-old and looked to be a shadow of his former self. Zabeel
Zabeel (25 October 1986 – 25 September 2015) was a New Zealand-bred racehorse who predominantly raced in Australia. He was retired to stud and became a champion sire. He is a bay son of Sir Tristram (IRE) from the Nureyev mare Lady Giselle. During his racing career, he won seven races, including the Moonee Valley Stakes in 1989 and the Australian Guineas, the Alister Clark Stakes, and the Craiglee Stakes in 1990. After retiring to stud in 1991, he sired 153 individual stakes winners of 350 stakes races, including Vengeance of Rain, who won the Dubai Sheema Classic and holds the earnings record in Hong Kong. Zabeel has also sired the Australian champions Octagonal and Might And Power, who won 17 Group One races between them, including the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plates, three runnings of the Mercedes Classic, and the Sydney three-year-old triple crown. The Great Northern Hurdles is one of New Zealand's feature jumping races. History The race has been run in early September since 2005, after previously being held in early June. The Great Northern Hurdles is now raced on the same day as the Great Northern Steeplechase The Great Northern Steeplechase is New Zealand's richest steeplechase. For most of its life the race was run over at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, making it Australasia's longest horse race, and usually took over eight minutes to complete. .... Kelt Capital Stakes
The Livamol Classic is a Weight-for-age Thoroughbred horse race run at Hastings Racecourse in Hawke's Bay and was at one stage New Zealand's richest horse race. It is run at a distance of 2040m. The race is run in October. The weather in the Hawke's Bay's means the track conditions are usually excellent. The race is the part of the Triple Crown raced at Hastings Racecourse, along with: - the 1400m Tarzino Trophy which was previously known as the Makfi Challenge Stakes or Mudgway Stakes, and - the 1600m Arrowfield Stud Plate which was previously known as the Windsor Park Plate, Stony Bridge Stakes and Horlicks Plate. Xcellent (foaled 29 November 2001 in New Zealand) is a thoroughbred racehorse who was trained by Michael & Paul Moroney. He won 6 races from his first 9 career starts, including four Group Ones - The New Zealand Derby and New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie Racecourse, and the Mudgway Stakes and Kelt Capital Stakes at Hastings. On 1 November 2005, he ran third in the Melbourne Cup, behind three-time winner Makybe Diva. In early 2006, Xcellent damaged both front tendons and was out of action for 18 months before returning to the track in the 2007 Stradbroke Handicap and doing little on an unsuitably wet track under a large weight. Sir Tristram (IRE) (7 April 1971 – 21 May 1997) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who stood at stud in New Zealand, where he sired an extraordinary 45 Group One winners, including three Melbourne Cup winners. His progeny earned him 17 official Leading Australasian sire premierships, plus nine broodmare sire titles. The Zabeel Classic is a Group One Thoroughbred horse race run at weight-for-age over a distance of 2000 metres at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held on Boxing Day, a raceday steeped in tradition that frequently attracts in excess of 20,000 Aucklanders to the famous course. The Zabeel Classic is named in honour of Zabeel, son of Sir Tristram and four-time New Zealand champion sire.
