St Joseph's GAA (Laois)
St Joseph's GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It won nine Laois Senior Football Championship titles between 1973 and 2000. The club colours are yellow with blue trim and the main club grounds are located at Kellyville with a secondary grounds at Milltown. History Founded in 1954 as an underage club, it won the Laois minor and junior football titles in 1967, the minor title again in 1968, the Laois Intermediate Football Championship in 1969 and a further junior title in 1976. Then St Joseph's progressed to win nine Laois Senior Football Championship titles: in 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1983, 1989, 1994, 1996 and 2000. As well as this, the club (in an amalgamation with Barrowhouse GAA, Barrowhouse) won the Under-21 Championship in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Mick Dempsey (Gaelic Footballer)
Michael Dempsey is an Irish former Gaelic footballer and manager. He played at senior level for the Laois county team. Early life Born to Jack Dempsey (originally from Laois) and Annie Spain (originally from County Offaly), Dempsey is one of seven children: the others are Martin, P. J., Seán, Betty (Moore), Margaret (Farrelly) and Anne Dempsey all of whom have links with the St Joseph's club. Playing career Dempsey captained his club St Joseph's to the Laois Senior Football Championship title in 1983. He spent many years playing for the laois county team and was part of the team that won the National Football League title in 1986. Laois Intermediate Football Championship
The Laois Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier Laois GAA clubs. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The Heath are the title holders (2022) defeating Arles–Kilcruise in the Final. Format The Intermediate Championship has a 'back door' and operates similarly to the Senior Championship (and Junior Championship C only) by going for a straight knockout but the 'back door' is in place for anyone losing out. Laois All-County Football League
The Laois All-County Football League (ACFL) is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by Laois GAA clubs. There are seven divisions and teams are promoted and relegated according to their league standing each year. Prior to the inception of the All-County Football League, league competitions titled the Senior Football League, Intermediate Football League and Junior Football League were in place. These would have roughly equated to the current top three or four divisions in the ACFL. International Rules Series
The International Rules Series is a senior men's international rules football competition between the Australia international rules football team (selected by the Australian Football League) and the Ireland international rules football team (selected by the Gaelic Athletic Association). The series is played biannually over two Test matches in November after the completion of the AFL Grand Final and the All-Ireland Football Final, which are both traditionally played in late September, and the winner is the team with the highest cumulative score over both Tests; however, there have been six unscheduled years since 2009. Noel Garvan
Noel Garvan is a former inter-county Gaelic footballer from County Laois. He plays for the St Joseph's club. He usually played at midfield for Laois and played a huge part in 2003 when Laois ended the 57-year wait for the Leinster Senior Football Championship title. Garvan emerged on to the scene in 1996 as part of the Laois minor team that won the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship title. Son of Tommy Garvan, himself no mean operator on a football field, Noel Garvan caught the eye with his spectacular high fielding as a minor and quickly progressed through the ranks picking up a Leinster U21 Football Championship medal in 1998 before adding a Sigerson Cup title to his honours list in 1999 when he also won the Player of the Tournament award with IT Tralee. Seán Dempsey
Seán Dempsey is an Irish Gaelic football manager, coach, selector and former player. He played at minor, under-21 and senior level for the Laois county team. Dempsey later managed Laois at minor, under-21 and senior level and has been involved with the St Joseph's club, as well as several clubs in other counties (e.g. Dublin, Offaly). Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Tom Kelly (Gaelic Footballer)
Tom Kelly is a former Gaelic footballer from County Laois. His club is St Joseph's. He usually played at centre back for Laois and in 2003 won an All Stars Award and was part of the Laois team that won the Leinster Senior Football Championship title for the first time since 1946. Kelly twice travelled to Australia for the International Rules Series, where he was Ireland's player of the series in 2005. With St Joseph's, Kelly picked up two Laois Senior Football Championship medals. In January 2011, Kelly was forced to retire due to a neck injury he sustained the year before. The Swan, County Laois
Swan or The Swan () is a small village in County Laois, Ireland. Around 20 km south-east of Portlaoise, it lies near the County Kilkenny border where the R430 regional road crosses the R426. The village lies within the townland of Slatt (Lower), in the civil parish of Rathaspick. History The Swan is a relatively "new" village in County Laois, and is named after a local public house, The Swan Inn. A fire clay factory was opened in the area in 1935 to take advantage of local fire clay deposits. Amenities The village is largely linear, developed along the R430 regional road. There are no shops in the village, and it is served primarily by the pub, and a community centre in the centre of the village.
