St Bride's GFC
St Bride's GFC is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club that fields gaelic football teams in competitions organised by Louth GAA. It is based in the County Louth village of Knockbridge. As of 2023, the club competes in the Louth Senior Championship and Division 1 of the county football Leagues. Gary Mallon is the manager of the senior team. History The club was founded in 1927. Their sole success in the Louth Senior Football Championship came in 1943, when they defeated Cooley Kickhams in the county final by 3–09 to 2–03. Knockbridge
Knockbridge () is a village in County Louth, Ireland. It is located in the townland of Ballinlough (''Baile an Locha'') in the historical barony of Dundalk Upper. As of the 2016 census, the village had a population of 667 people. Knockbridge won a "best kept village" award in the 2008 Tidy Towns competition. Facilities The village is centred on a crossroads, where there is a pub and a shop. There are four housing estates, a Roman Catholic church and a large primary school in the village. Stephenstown House, a large ruined Georgian house, once owned by a branch of the Fortescue family, stands beside the River Fane about a mile outside the village. Stephenstown Pond, about a hundred metres from the house, was redeveloped in the mid-1990s and is a public amenity. Stephenstown Pond has a conference centre and an community enterprise space. Louth Junior Football Championship
The Louth Junior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition, organised by Louth GAA and contested by the junior One/A grade Gaelic football clubs in County Louth, Ireland. The winner qualifies to represent the county in the Leinster Junior Club Football Championship, the winner of which then progresses to represent Leinster in the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship. Honours The winning team is presented with the Christy Bellew Cup, named after the Drogheda GAA official and Killineer Larks club member who was chairman of Louth GAA in the 1920s. The cup was presented for the first time in 1949 to the victorious St Bride's team. The Junior championship itself was first contested in 1904. Aaron Hoey
Aaron Hoey is a retired Gaelic footballer and hurler from County Louth, Ireland. He played with Louth, St Brides and Knockbridge Hurling Club. He was part of the Louth team that played in the final of the Leinster Senior Football Championship in 2010 where he appeared as a sub, but were beaten in controversial circumstances by Meath. Hoey was a member of the Garda College side that lost the Final of the 1998/99 Sigerson Cup to Tralee IT. In 2002, Hoey scored 1–07 in the semi-final of the Louth Senior Football Championship against Dundalk Gaels, helping St Bride's to reach their first county senior final in almost sixty years. Mattock Rangers proved too strong in the final, as St Bride's lost out by three points despite Hoey contributing 0–10. Séamus Kirk
Séamus Kirk (born 26 April 1945) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician who served as Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Éireann from 2009 to 2011 and a Minister of State from 1987 to 1992. County Board (Gaelic Games)
A county is a geographic region within Gaelic games, controlled by a county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) and originally based on the 32 counties of Ireland as they were in 1884. While the administrative geography of Ireland has since changed, with several new counties created and the six that make up Northern Ireland superseded by 11 local government districts, the counties in Gaelic games have remained largely unchanged. However, the county as used in Gaelic games does not always and everywhere cover precisely the same territory as the traditional county. Louth Junior 2A Football League
The Louth Junior 2A Football League, or Division 4 of the county football Leagues, is an annual Gaelic football competition that was introduced by Louth GAA in 1941 and contested by the second teams of Senior clubs in County Louth. The captain of the winning team is presented with the Cairnes Cup. Format A Final to determine the winner was held annually until 2015, when the format changed. At the end of the league programme, the team with the most points is now awarded the trophy. If two or more teams finish level on points at the top of the table, a play-off will decide the winner. The team that finishes bottom of the league is relegated to Division 5. Trophy The Ranafast Cup was presented to each winning team from 1944 until 1999. Louth Under-21 Football Championship
The Louth Under-21 Football Championship is an annual competition organised by Louth GAA for Gaelic football teams in County Louth. History First contested in 1972, the inaugural winners were Cooley Kickhams. As is the case nationally, amalgamated parish teams are a regular feature of the competition due to lack of numbers. The county board removed the competition from the calendar in the mid-1980s but it returned in 1991. The competition has on occasion been run as an under-20 tournament, in line with changes introduced by the GAA in 2018. It has since reverted to the U-21 format. The Louth Minor Football Championship is an annual competition organised by Louth GAA between the premier teams in minor (under-17) Gaelic football in County Louth. Trophy The winning team is presented with the Father Larry Murray Cup, named after the Louth priest who was a dedicated promoter of underage football and the Irish language.
